How would you go about playing this?
« on: June 10, 2008, 05:15:58 PM »
Would this be tapped or picked?

It seems too much of a stretch to be picked but I don't understand how I would tap it.

Cheers

Use your index finger on the 12th fret and ring finger for the 15th fret pull offs, then tap the 19 and 17s with your right hand for the first bit. Easiest way I can see to do it.

^ EDIT: damn you tom for saying what i said in one and a half lines...

the first line you could either tap or just play legato with your left hand (assuming your fingers stretch that much).

second bar i'd probably tap, at least the 19-14-10 bit... that's a pretty big stretch.

third line first bar i'd tap, second bar i'd play legato (though it might be easier to tap it too, considering you'd already been tapping).

not quite sure what you mean by "how would you tap it?"

I'd personally do:

19 (T)-15(P)-12(P)-17(T)-15(P)-12(P) etc.

where T is a tap and P is a pull-off.

Makes sense? Or have I misunderstood?

+1

Plus the last bit I would just pull off.

Last bit is easy. Just the bits with the bit curved line over the top :P.what about where it goes from 17 to 7?

Keep the position of two fingers.

The highest fret, you tap. And then the rest you use those two fingers to pull off.

19t 15 12
17t 15 12
19t 14 10
17t 14 10
15t 14 10
19t 10 7
17t 10 7
15t 10 7
14t 10 7

That's all the sequences you need.

If you have a really wide stretch, like Lynch or Vai, you can do this without tapping.

No macho BS here - I doubt it's physically possible for anyone to make that stretch.

I can get there with my thumb on the 7th fret.

Otherwise from index to pinky the farthest I can get is 7th to 17th.  I would love to see somebody pull off the lick in the first post without tapping.

I've never seen Lynch or Vai stretch that much. That said, if they can Jason Becker could too, and I've never seen Becker do more than 5-12. I can pull off that lick without tapping, but I have to cheat a bit on the 3rd bar by strechting 10th to 19th and slide down to 7th. It's kind of a clumsy way to go about it and I much prefer to play that B on the 2nd string. Makes it a very Gilbert sounding lick.

But it's clearly meant to be tapped.
