^ Same for me.

Except there was a period when I played a of acoustic guitar- that shredded my fingers and gave me pretty big callouses.

I don't see my callouses anymore. Which is either 1. I'm not playing enough, 2. I've played past the point they get any more um.. rough I suppose.

The former is more likely.

I'm not a painter or draughtsperson so maybe I'm missing something, but why do you need sensitive finger tips? It's not like callouses cause you to loose muscle control. And frankly I would have thought that he'd have callouses from the tools of his trade anyway?

I'm not going to call him retarded, that's harsh, but I don't know how he expects to be able to play without forming callouses. Maybe play for 10 mins every other week?

Been playing 10 years

Havent seen a callous in about 9 years and 6 months.

I just have thick, moderately de-sensitised skin (can still feel pain in the fingertips, but maybe half of doing the same thing to my right hand, which, oddly, on the very rare occasions that I try a left handed guitar, doesnt hurt at all with fretting)

I can't say I've ever noticed callouses from guitar playing. I did play the viola for a long time before and during my time as a guitarist, so that might have had something to do with it.

I have far, far worse callouses from rowing, and something tells me they'll never go away. It's been several years since I stopped already, and they've not gone down.

That said, I don't really give a flying funk. Who cares if I have a few callouses on my hands?! Oh my, I can't let them see me like this! Jesus.

I used to get really ripped up skin on my fingertips when playing electric.
Now I mostly play acoustic, and its much more demanding on the fingertips, but I dont get as much ripped skin, and only very light callouses.

On another topic, are any of you here head-fier's :D ?

As for playing without padding; I never actually got any callouses, my fingers look perfectly normal, they're just a bit harder than usual at the tips. Sometimes after a real long session the skin will be peeling off my fingers, but it doesn't usually hurt at all, and it heals up in a couple of days. Nothing to start a thread about

+1  My experience too.

+ another.

But what's the difference between "a bit harder than usual at the tips" (or "thick, moderately de-sensitised skin", as Mark put it) and callouses?  Aren't they the same thing?
