Well I finally picked up my 1978 JMP 50W from Steve, at Steve's Amps this morning. He wasn't particularly quick at getting the work done, but has done a very good job at turning the amp from a trebly, breaking glass tone, hissy nightmare into a very nice amp. Alll he actually did was put in a new pair of JJ EL34's, change one resistor in the pre-amp circuit and generally just check everything else out.
The amp was way better than it had been, but still a bit too harsh for me. So later this morning I then took out the bright cap, and replaced the treble peaking resistor/cap pair between the low gain input and the pre-amp volume pot, with a 68K resistor (much more of a vintage value).
The amp has now been transformed, and is now a really beefy, chunky version of the original amp I bought.
I recorded a few clips through a Marshall 4x12 with Greenbacks, this afternoon, and they show what a nice amp this has become.

What do you think ?
I had already decided I was going to sell the amp, almost however good it was, as I now need a channel switcher, and my Rockerverb 50 now does everything I want.
Stuck it on Ebay this afternoon, and it's sold with a BIN within an hour !!! Damn, wish I'd put it up at a bit higher price now.
Still, to be honest I'm happy with the price. I think I've only made about a £30 loss overall (including all the fees), so I feel I've done pretty well.
Maybe I can just now relax, and maybe not even buy another amp for at least 6 months. I was going to say a year, but I'm being realistic - I have an appalling record recently. In the last 6 months I have been through a Martamp JTM45, a Vox AC30HH, a Ceriatone Plexi 50W, a Marshall JMP50 and an Orange Rockerverb 50W. That's almost one a month.
