Bridge in neck position?

Has anyone wired a bridge into the neck position (for more neck output in a mixed set) and liked the results?

I know its bad form to do this and that N/B are made differently (in some cases even use different magnets) etc, but, never the less, has anyone done it and found LO, IT WAS GOOD!

I've not tried it, but I wouldn't be against giving it a go if it appeared to be a solution to something I needed. For me, if it sounded right, it would be "right"...

Having said that, I seem to be always reaching for traditional, "vintage" sounds, so Tim's matched sets seem to be the way forward for me...

I have 2 bridge single coils in the neck and middle of one of my strats. Sounds feckin' ballsy!!

Haven't tried it but what would you replace the bridge position with?  Bridge pickups are generally wound hotter than neck pickups to counteract the smaller string vibrations at the bridge. If you put the same output pickup at the bridge then it is going to sound much weaker than the neck. I suppose you could mix sets (e.g. warpig bridge, nailbomb neck etc) but personally I think you can't beat a calibrated set.

I think this is mostly when you've got a high output bridge humbucker (like a Nailbomb) and you want some more vintage sounds from the neck (Stormy Monday or Mule). In that case, putting a Mule bridge into the neck position would still give a paf sound, and balance better with the hot bridge pup than the neck model would. It would not sound the same as the Mule neck though, there's compromises with everything.

It should work pretty well with the PAF-type models where the neck pickup pretty much is a slightly underwound version of the bridge pickup (AFAIK).

I would think most of the higher-output bridge models would be too dark and mushy in the neck position, but as Eric said it can definitely work the other way round, putting a neck pickup in the bridge.  Expensive experiment though, unless you already have the pickups to try!

i have original dirty fingers in the neck and bridge of a V and the neck is glorious! I suppose that people worried about it less in the old days. Recently though I'm a bit lazy to experiment because it becomes a bit of a bind to pull guitars a part and put them back together. I like the way its practically guaranteed one of Tim's combos will work really well.

Yeah, that sprung to mind when I saw this thread title. Not so convinced by its matching with the bridge pickup, or maybe I should reserve judgement until it is all fixeded.
The neck DF is just great though, anyone tried a pair of CS bridges? :twisted:

I have an aII stormy monday bridge pup in the neck of my ibanez and it sounds great.  did it on tim's advice as well so I wouldn't agree that it's "bad form"

Thanks Doog, I knew someone had an SM bridge as a neck pickup on Tim's recommendation, which was why I replied initially, but I couldn't remember who it was.  :)
