Maturing tastes
« on: June 17, 2008, 11:35:15 AM »
I have been playing a homebrew telecaster (alder body, big ol' baseball bat'esque one piece maple neck) with Piledrivers in since early 2004. Up until this point they have served be very well as I played mostly distorted type music. I'm looking to tone down my pickups, and get something a lot more traditional sounding. I'm looking for a 'tastes like chicken' single coil combo for the guitar Must be able to handle everything, ie go from a sweet whisper to a roar (with the right amp) Any suggestions?

I know, but I want my tele to sound like a tele, rather than teleish.

I haven't got any of the Tele sets, but the Flat '50 Blackguards sound a good choice for a slightly bigger, tougher version of vintage Tele tone.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

Silly... Read the posts carefully next time!

Blackguards or maybe yardbirds might be up your ally- I wouldn't recommend the Country Boys, I love them as a set, but not what you're describing. They are pretty warm and 'round' sounding- not bright and clear like you seem to want. I would recommend them highly if you want a slightly warmer tele tone.

Strange, over the last ten years or so, my tastes have been maturing to heavier and heavier music... Can't help with your choice there, sounds like a nightmare come true!!

It's not so much what i'm listening to,I just want to change my tele in order to play more 'traditional' telecaster music, and the piledrivers just dont sound traditional enough for me as it is. I personally was thinking countryboys, and just wondered if anyone has had experience with them in alder bodied telecasters.

It doesn't come any heavier than Danny Gatton.

Besides the great thing about going vintage with your main guitar is that you have to buy another axe to cover all the other options.

I had them, really liked them, classic yet warm. Wait for 38thBeatle to come in, he loves his and waxes lyrical about them every chance he gets...

And right on cue I appear. My Country Boy laden MIM tele is, I think, ash bodied. As Mark says, they are very warm and very much pure vintage Tele sounding ( and I have a/b'd it against a genuine old Tele and it is pretty close). They are not too powerful but I am of the view that you get more tone from low output pickups. I have never found the guitar lacking when cranking things a tad. I can't compare them with any other BKP Tele pickups though. The Blackguards would be another set that I would love to try but I won't be changing my pickups as they do exactly what I want them to. I tend to play clean tones and so having the traditional Tele tone was my aim. I am not going to mention 4 way switches either .....doh I just did.
Send three and fourpence we're going to a dance

I'd say Roy Buchanan, but let's not split hairs.

get the country boys.. i have them and tend to play loud and heavy rock like zepplin , sabbath and neil young.. they have a very classic tele 50's sound, but there is  slight more low end grit and color.. its not overwhelming but def enough to keep the balls in your music.. the output is fine and i would not worry about that.
