It's ammeature, photos and design.

A lot of the photos look like they've been taken on a cheap compact, or a budget SLR with budget-end glass.

The lighting, half of them look like they were taken with naked flash or on-board flash... a bit of diffusion and actually making the white background white would have made the lack of image quality not so apparent, at least to my picky eyes!

and thats exactly why the black horribleness is there around the photos... they couldn't be bothered to make the images all uniformly white on the background (which is the whole point of a white background, to be honest) and just made it black so it didn't look weird, and to me, this hasnt worked, it just looks poor, a rush job at this point.

the rest of the site however is really good and effective... without the black uglyness in the middle and the black bar at the top which really annoys my eye, i'd give it a 4/5.

i'm SO glad i can do all this myself... and better.

and it'd actually work too, look at the link section at the bottom left, only 'products' work, the rest do not. The ones in the top right work just fine, how the hell can anyone over look that?! they've tried to link to HTML pages instead of the PHP's that actually exist... wowza. I can't beleive the site has been allowed to go live!

screw doing architecture, i'll go off to do web design instead...

Edit : the bottom left works when viewing a guitar in the products section, those are correctly linked up. The rest however are not, what a thorough little design company...

You might want to do a bit of work on your spelling and grammar first!

I don't agree about the black borders; they serve a useful purpose of breaking up an otherwise bleak white space.

In any case it's certainly better than the one they had before, and with a few tweaks will be fine.

It looks okay to me, difinitely better than their old one.  As long as a web site is easy to navigate and has the info I'm not too fussed what it looks like.  The photos are fine and show the guitars no matter what camera they were taken on.

May be Gordon Smith should have spent thousands on a pro website with flash etc, pro photos and an annoying intro?  Then they would have added the cost of the website to the guitar RRP's!

I think GSG are more about keeping the costs low and concentrating on making hand crafted instruments at an affordable price for guitar players.

I do agree that that broken links are annoying though, no excuse for that!

It's a damn sight better than the old one. Much cleaner layout and far more useful information, which has been made easier to access.

The photography lets it down a little IMO, the flash reflection on a few pics makes it look a bit amateurish. Overall though, I think it works well, and isn't overcomplicating things with any nonsense.

I used to have a GS1, it was like a magic whistle, it practically played itself! I sold it for 150 quid, it's got to be one of my biggest gear-related regrets!

Nice new site, the old one was useless!

Ditto - it's a MASSIVE improvement over the last site...  But it all lends itself to that GS "home grown" image, no frills merchandise.

I'm LOVING their SG 2s...

They are based in Partington in west Manchester, in an old Launderette I believe (or next to one....).  Basically just a small workshop in a small row of shops, you wouldn't even know it was there....
