Neck Pup to complement Rebel Yell Bridge
« on: June 30, 2008, 09:21:05 PM »
Hi all,
I'm a long time lurker, and not new to Bareknuckle Pickups - I have a Trilogy Suite set in my Strat and BKP92s in my Jaguar.
I have a Les Paul type guitar on the way that is being made for me, and have chosen a Nailbomb bridge and MQueen Neck as the pickups.

But now my dilemma is what to put in to my other Les Paul (copy) as I want to upgrade...
I want something slightly different, and listening to the clips, I am liking the Rebel Yell bridge.  But I want a vintage feel neck pickup...
Would a Stormy Monday be overpowered by the Bridge?

Your suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks, Thom.

Welcome!  :D

Volume-wise, I don't think the SM would be overpowered by the RY.  But as a pair, they're both (relatively) bright and clear, so you wouldn't really get that nice increase in warmth and fatness when switching from bridge to neck.

Depends what sort of tones you're after though.  I think the SM is better for clean(ish) tones than distorted ones - it's hard (for me, anyway) to get really singing sustain from it.

BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

Thanks for the welcome and the answer :)
I do want something relatively clear, but would certainly like a touch more warmth from the neck.  Would you suggest something like a Mule instead to get this?

I haven't got a Mule neck (yet!) but from all I've read I think it would be better suited if you play rock (of whatever type) as opposed to bluesier, cleaner stuff.

The Abraxas neck is another pickup, with similar specs to the Mule, which works really well with the RY if you like a warm, singing sound (without being muddy).  There's a thread here in which I was trying to find out more about the differences between the Abraxas, Mule and Stormy Monday neck models:

And of course there's the Rebel Yell neck too, or the Cold Sweat which is a big favourite with people who like a clear, articulate neck pickup to match with hotter bridge models.  I haven't tried either, I'm afraid.

the Rebel Yell neck is meant to be a sort of half way house between the VH2 and Cold Sweat neck - both vintage voiced.

I have a Cold Sweat neck with a Rebel Yell bridge (temporarily) and it works out just fine.

The Rebel Yell neck is actually designed to compliment the Rebel Yell bridge, have you heard a clip of it in action? it is a very nice pickup for the neck position ( i am having one in my Ibanez soon) Its great for solo work and has very nice clarity and is quite sweet imo.

But this is from a complementing point of view if it is vintage you are sure you are after then yes maybe The Mule or Stormy Monday though i would say The Mule neck would be the right way to go if you are desperate for the best vintage tone u can get.

+1 to a calibrated set-they are incredible together-big,full on cleans...fat and big sustain, but with the proper amount of high end-no mush-I wouldnt think twice about it!!

Sounds like calibrated set may be the way forward then.
Thanks everyone.

Good decision, I have a RY set and they match perfectly. Neck has ess output and a more vintage vibe, I am even using it wuite a bit - I usually avoid neck pickups (many times too muffled for my taste)

I had a Rebel Yell bridge, with a Miracle Man in my PRS, and while I absolutely LOVE the RY, the MM is just not a good fit in the neck.It is way too muddy for me. That said, I ordered a calibrated RY set to replace them, and I'll move the other RY brideg to another guitar, and probably try the MM in the bridge position on something.

I'm def. in love with the Rebey Yells!
