Hi all,

I've been wondering...is it worth signing up for one of those paid tab sites? Trawling the web for tab and then discovering it's been badly done is getting annoying. If anyone here is a member of one or if anyone has any experience with them, could you tell me if it's worth the money and if so which ones are the best.

I'm assuming because you have to pay that the Tabs are pretty much spot-on?

Might be worth seeing if you can download tabs using Bit Torrent. You should be able to find some tab books in PDF format.

Don't assume they'll be accurate just because you've paid for them!

There used to be some really good sites until the record labels decided that the notated music was also their property, regardless of who created it.

Ultimate guitar is one of the few sites that never got closed down- i think it was due to them paying some sort of fee to the licensing agencies, letting them off the hook for public interpretations.

I only use the ultimate guitar chord sheets these days, due to me never learning anything by other people any more and i can pretty much work out what's going on if i know the root chords.

I would never pay for tabs unless they were official tab books. Half of them aren't even right so i don't see why you should have to pay for it.

the ones on UG, if you go for the powertab versions, are actually pretty good. powertab is a free download too. they contain the music as well as tab (which is a godsend for me; even though i'm not much good at reading music, i feel lost without it as well as the tab... :lol: ).

they have guitar pro tabs too, but you have to pay to download that... needless to say i haven't tried it...  :lol:

Dave's spot on. The Powertab sites used to be the best place to get reliable tabs, and the accompanying midi tracks are ace. Generally, any powertab you can find will be good - it take a little more effort to create the tab, so the numpties tend not to bother with it.

These do very good tabs but i think they're mostly books but if your paying you'll get more for your money and they do backing cds for the tabs. I got a great tab book by the clash.

+1 got Guitar Pro - worth the money and the tabs are pretty good too - only issue that I have found is that the RSE (Realistic Sound Engine) takes a long time to load, so I don't bother!

Well Ultimate Guitar is good, but I usually work it out by ear, unless for some reason i'm in a mad rush. It's really good for your playing, I spent about 1-2 hours a day for a few weeks just downloading random metal-ish songs with cool riffs and working them out, it's a cool skill to have, although i'm not perfect yet, by all means, but I can do it fairly quickly, and then you can be sure it's right, and if need-be check it against the tabs. :) Also handy if you can't be bothered to tune into some strange tunings some bands seem to have :)

The thing is, that official tab books aren't necessarily accurate either... :(
