Can I get some Funk out of this junk?
« on: July 09, 2008, 12:26:33 AM »
Perhaps it is a total paradox, but I am looking to get telecastery twang and brightness in the humbucker mount of a mahogany body guitar, what can I do?

I am looking to get something really hot that I can beat out the funk strums and surfy tremolo picking with, harmonics and overtones are desired but not quite as necessary, externally I've been recommended coil splitting a Duncan JB. Its probably going to sit opposite a Warpig... I want some serious contrast.

Some of my favorite players
Rowland S. Howard of The Birthday Party
East Bay Ray of The Dead Kennedys
D Boon of The Minutemen
Steve Albini of Big Black
Syd Barrett of Pink Floyd
Jimi.
John McLaughlin of the Mahavishnu Orchestra
Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath
Clapton in Cream
Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin
Piggy of Voivod
Eddie Hazel of Funkadelic
Tom Morello of RATM

Hi, welcome to the forum.

I can't help much, but as I started reading your post my first thought was "you'll have to coil-split something". I haven't tried that with any BKPs (mainly cos I decided years ago that I didn't like splitting humbuckers when compared to actual single coils) - others might have some good advice on which ones split well.

Is this pickup going to be neck or bridge? I'm assuming bridge, but if not, I think you might well be talking total paradox!!  (especially in a mahogany body? )

An underwound Mississippi Queen (P-90) or a coil-tapped Riff Raff are my first thoughts.
