High Output pickup advice...
« on: July 13, 2008, 09:30:08 PM »
Hey what's up.  I've asked for a pickup recommendation before, but now my needs have changed.  I'm joining a band that's in the vein on Lamb of God, Divine Heresey, etc.  They'll be going into a PRS Mira (SG type mahogany body & neck w/rosewood board) that is highly resonant that's very strong mid to low-mid ranges.  If it's of any help I just put a Duncan Distortion in to tide me over till I order the BKs.  It's definitely not working.  Way too muddy & warm in the Mira.  It lacks tightness, punch, articulation, and highs.  I don't think it's hot enough to drive through the wood like I need with this particular guitar for this style of music.  From playing some friends' guitars w/higher output pickups (i.e. EMGs) I've come to realize my amps do very well with the high output.  I was thinking CS for neck.  For the bridge I was thinking C-Pig, C-Nailbomb, or a Painkiller.  Although I'm not sure the PK will work for this guitar. What say ye?

Personally I'd go with a Cold Sweat. But Painkiller and C-Pig are probably more ideal for that music style.

Painkiller, no question.  I think the C-Pig has too much bass & low-mids for faster riffage but prefect for stoner/Sabbath stuff.

Cool.  Thanks for the advice.  So is the PK pretty hot, like say an EMG 81?  Only on ask because one of my Marshall's came alive with an EMG slamming the front.

the painkiller reminds me of the sh-6 and gibson 500t without all the defects
absolutely NO mud, and has a ton of tightness, punch, articulation, highs and everything you want

but if you really like the EMG 81 voicing, I can't see why you wouldn't be happy with a miracle man, cause it's got everything the EMG 81 has, but with more low end and a passive organic grind, like a roaring harley davidson chopper

the Painkiller is the closest BKP to the EMG81 in terms of output and EQ that I've tried, it's actually a little bit hotter than the EMG81 too imo - drove a ZW 2203 slightly harder.

Frankly, I feel if you want the 81 tone, an 81 is the only thing to go for, miracle men come close, and are a big improvement in some ways - But if you've fallen in love with the 81 tone, you won't be satisfied.

BKP Painkiller is my choice for metal. Love it.
It's nothing like an EMG81 though IMO, less output and a different voicing altogether.
Not a big fan of the EMG81 personally, these BKPs are much more my thing.

As always - ask the man himself for the best answer regarding your guitar/style.

It's not so much that I've fallen in love with the 81 tone, it's their output slamming the preamp into overdrive that my amps respond well too.  That's what made me take notice that I need tighter, hotter pickups.  I've had 81's before and while there are things about them I like I have the usual complaints of them sounding sterile, tinny, and slightly fake, so they always end up pissing me off .
