Can someone tell me what Facebook actually is?

I mean, I've heard of it, but what do you do with it?  What's it for?  Is it one of these places where you have long lists of "friends", with tiny little pictures of themselves, who post the odd random comment?

For me, Facebook acts as a way of communication to people I know in real life, rather than forum friends/gaming friends etc. It allows me to find out next day's homework, tell someone to bring in text books, that sort of thing.

I just use it to keep in contact with people. I wouldnt use it if no one at uni used it though, thats the only reason I joined in the first place.

yeah thats pretty much it... but it is very handy for organising nights out and parties as well and keeping in touch with people i probably wouldnt have the time to see ... not to mention the dodgy photos of me that tend to appear every sunday morning.. thats always fun to look forward to

So do you stay logged in to it all the time and messages pop up as you receive them?

A bit like Windows Messenger, but with a web page?  I have that on my PC of course, but it's permanently switched off - I don't really want people knowing when I'm logged on and sending messages all the time!

Why is someone holding an angle grinder in their photo?

That is a feature of the site - But not the essence of it, its more like the PM system on this forum.

Imagine a forum and each thread is a person's page, which anyone can post on, provided you've been accepted as a friend to said person.

And then you can add different things to your thread, including info about you, and vids etc.

The main feature I like about Facebook is the photo system - Anyone can upload photos to facebook, and then note down the people in each picture, say there's a photo of a group of friends, people can look at the picture, and then note down the names of each person in the picture.

Next thing you know there's a notification on your page saying that someone's got a picture of you, you click it, and lo and behold there's a photo of you on a night out last week. And then anyone looking at your page, can look at any photos which you've been tagged in, so it jumps about every single photo with you in on the whole of the facebook archive, which if you have a lot of camera savvy friends, can mean seeing photos from looooads of albums - Its not rare to see people who have hundreds of photos of themselves around facebook - Simply because lots of their mates have camera phones etc.

Hahahaha - You caught me.

Running joke, competition to have manliest photo among my mates - I had a hammer last, but someone beat me by putting one of them with a sledgehammer, so we're having to step up a gear.
