Wiring kits
« on: July 14, 2008, 05:08:19 PM »
Does anyone know if there are any wiring kits available online, preferably pre-wired like the ones RSGuitarworks offers? I want to rewire my LP but don't want to order from the states. Is there any places available online here in Europe (Germany)?

Sorry I have none, but IMO avoid Stewmac.  I got one of their kits and the shielded wire was cr@p.  The braided metal sleeve had very thin strands and when you pushed it back it was even more sparse.  Under the metal it was just the plastic from the wire; no cloth.  Anywhere I tried to ground it I just melted through the plastic underneath.  Just very cheap feeling overall.

Thanks for the heads up. I am looking for something like what RS offers, but am not really interested in paying the ridiculous shipping and custom charges. Last time those two charges almost equaled the cost of my entire order. I am having a rough time finding pre-wired kits here in Europe though.

You've probably considered it already, but what about getting the appropriate pots, caps and wire individually?

I've never really looked at the costs of the RS kits, but presumably they're more expensive than separate bits?

Yeah, somewhere along the line I figured out that I like the convenience of those RS kits. They are just so neat and tidy. I am all thumbs when it comes to wiring. I've done it a billion times and don't seem to get any better. :(

Here is a helpful article from Stewmac
Love the idea for doing the wiring on a template - not sure the wiring looks correct in that picture though

Yeah, I've always done that - I even, tragically, keep the bits of cardboard for future use!

There's definitely something weird about that wiring!

I came up with the cardboard template idea a while ago when I was going to rewire my LP but I never got round to it in the end.

Philly, you seem to know your stuff about wiring - could you have a look at my "tapping a p90" thread a few down and give advice? Wez has given the gist of it but I'm still a bit hazy on what I should actually be doing.

Actually the wiring on that pic is ok
They are using a different method of tone wiring- sometimes seen in oriental axes
The volume pots are to the right of the piccy and the earth tags have been bent back and soldered

Thanks for your help guys. In the end I gave in and ordered a prewired vintage set from RS. :D
I was rather curious about the super pots anyway, which evidently have been "tweaked" again, and also wanted to try out their vintage caps that many have raved about.
Once I get it put in I will let you know how it sounds!

My tech said the other week that the wood from epiphones being cheap means that expensive caps in them usually means lots of feedback.
Thought it may be relevant as you are an epi user too?

I can't see why that should be the case, but who knows, maybe it's true.

it tweaked my BS meter as well....  i dont think you see the effect of the caps as much in some guitars but a cap wont lead to extra feedback unless its screwed
