Antag, WATCHING sports is not a hobby!!!

That would be something you do, are involved in some way in. Not something you watch others do!

does that mean films can't count as a hobby? what's the difference? :D

I dont think there is any ;)

Nothing passive, to my mind is a hobby. Sit and look = passive.

A hobby is doing something. DIY, art, crafts, music, sports, athletics, mechanics, getting out and wandering round some woods, killing and eating things, growing and eating things, that manner of stuff.

Hobbies arent, IMHO, stuff you simply like. Cooking can be a hobby, eating cant, amature film making is a hobby, watching them aint, football is a hobby, going to see the sunday game is not (yes, I changed my mind - going to see people play a sport isnt a hobby, and niether is going to gigs :P). The list goes on.

Do I have some sort of harsh and draconian defintion of hobby? Does anyone get what I'm saying here?

Music takes up a lot of my time but other obsessions I have are reading and studying historical subjects. I don't get too much time however as I help Mrs 38th with her business and I tend to get a bit knackered. I do like travelling too but again, due to gigs and the business I am a bit restricted.

I don't want to have an argument Mark, but having read that thread where you debated, at great length, with Oppo 9 what a load of bollocks it was to define strict categories/genres of music, then yes I do think you have a harsh draconian definition of hobby.

To my mind if something interests you and you devote a lot of time to it, actively or passively, then it's a hobby.  If I can't have the word "hobby", I'll call it a "pastime". :P

Avidly watching Doctor Who is a hobby of mine - Avidly following sports, also a hobby.

Watching is just as valid an action as playing.

Hmm, don't do much that much. weird one, haven't had anything to do with the farm for 10 months, but tractor driving is just great, had two days of it, enjoy it, and always have done. hobby?
I think watching films can be quite active to some extent, as mates of mine are usually predicting plot, trying to see how things play out, then criticising how it didn't do any of that (kind of annoying :P )
but I am definately a passive film watcher...
Shooting was an old hobby, prefer rifles over shotguns; still a great shot somehow :?

I too fall in the watching Dr Who camp - I have been doing the from start to finish marathon and am at Pyramids of Mars at the moment, its gone on for 7 months now (aside from the fact i've seen them all before).  Troughton rules in my books.

Oh and I write history books.  Academic ones, so I don't get paid for them, so that is classed as a hobby in my opinion.

I associate "hobby" with something that you pass some time with and enjoy to do, but isn't that important in your life. Some might define that as a "pass-time", I dunno. I spend most of my free time with my girlfriend, religious activities, listening to and playing music, all of which are very important to me so I wouldn't call them just hobbies. I paint occasionally and go hiking, those are hobbies.

TwinFan, that's an AWESOME Duke!  I bet you can hear it a mile away...

I'm a black belt in kung fu; between that, the guitar and the wife and 2 darling boys (not necessarily in that order...) I have my time pretty much allocated.

I organised and played in a weekly 5 a side game until health prevented. Starting up again in September I hope.

I don't think that really makes any sense, Mark, to be honest.

Getting out and wandering round some woods is a hobby but going to a football match isn't?

I think a hobby is something a person does solely for the purpose of enjoyment. Whether that be skydiving, playing chess, or cooking, it doesn't really matter.

Still guitar-related, but I collect guitar magazines obsessively and have them going back over 25 years.

Do you - or anyone else want some more guitar mags
