I've included Joe Satriani although he remains an enigma to me, living proof (IMO) that fabulous tone and technique don't neccessarily make for great compositional skills. 30% of his stuff I absolutely love but the other 70% leaves me cold. To me it's like twee shopping mall muzak and truley cringeworthy even though his skill as a player is apparent throughout.
Anyone else think the same ????  :?

I kinda think that, but I'd liken some of his stuff to incidental music in a film.  Not always great, but compositionally sound, if you know what I mean.

Papa George/Stevie Simpson (not sure how many outside London will have come across these guys, but a few years back I used to see them every Sunday lunchtime in Surbiton in "The Monday Band" - they're good in their own right, but were stunning together...)

Trios, there's only one 3-git band I really like, Lynyrd Skynyrd - and I preferred the Rossington/Collins/Gaines trio (don't know a great deal about the post 76 line-ups)

Of course!!! ^ wot he said - I was racking my brains, but couldn't think of another.

The Lynyrd Skynyrd one gets my vote though - probably most of us know what a mess it can become when 3 guitarists get together in the same room... I'm still utterly dumbfounded how Lynyrd Skynyrd managed to make what is basically bar-room music sound so tight and powerful, with 3 blokes all widdling away at once!

(Assuming you still like the early stuff) you really should give Brave New World and Dance Of Death a go - the band has been as good or better than ever before since Smith and Dickinson rejoined. 

I always liked Maiden, but never took them very seriously - largely due to the giant Eddie puppets, spandex pants and all those galloping riffs.  But the recent material is absolutely superb, with some wonderful melodies and guitar arrangements.

Cheers for that Philly - I'd been wondering about what to sample.

I saw them with Paul Dianno (supporting on the British Steel tour) and thought they were rubbish(!). I saw them on their Powerslave tour and found them very slick and professional but a bit boring. I also saw them at a Reading festival around the same time (Lemmy and Fast Eddie joined them for Tush - the first time they'd been seen in public together after the Wendy O Williams bust up of Motorhead) and I thought they were brilliant, but I'd become a blueser by then and Judas Priest is about the only "metal" outfit I've really followed ever since then...

But they (Maiden) have lasted a hell of long time, and I'm getting the impression (from this forum mainly) that they've had a bit of a rebirth... so I was thinking of checking them out.

Well, to be fair, it'd be hard to call Tim overrated because very few people know who he is. Even within the PM scene and probably even within Iced Earth fandom.

Jon Schaffer absolutely is though, because I couldn't care less how technically capable a player he is, he still writes absolutely fucking shit songs.


EDIT: Although I'll denounce Tim on principle because I really do feel that strongly about power metal. :lol:

Can't say I agree with you, but fair enough. My opinion of Jon Schaffer is exactly reverse of yours, actually. Although he does have a tight picking hand, his technique isn't great (from what he has shown at least) but I think he's writes some of (if not the) most dynamic, powerful, and beautiful metal in the scene today. Sure it's a bit cheesy, all power metal is, but I can live with that.
