I'm thinking of sticking one in the neck of my tele and moving the neck pickup that's there currently in the neck in the middle. Any thoughts on this? I know I'd have to do a lot of gouging and get a new plate, or have the current one rearranged slightly, but how much does that sort of work cost? Because I might just bite the bullet and wait.

Why not put in a P-90? Less routing and a similar sound. I have both P-90 and MQ in the neck on different guitars. The MQ picks up less hum, but the P-90 sound great too.

philking, does your MQ have a (metal) cover, and is your p90 plastic? if so, that's more likely to be the cause of the p90 hum.

Hi Steve, I know the MQ is a little Faraday box! I have P-90's with both types of cover. The MQ's will hum when there is a lot of RFI around, but reject it better than the regular P-90.

I just got my Warpig/MQ set, so I'm going to fit that to my Richwood Explorer. I will see how they work together (also see how the Warpig sounds against my Pig-90).

Yes, P90's are longer.

How does the MQ differ from lets say a nailbomb with a coil tap? If i tap the nailbomb i should get a single coil around the DC: 8k rating. Would it sound close to the MQ?

Yes, P90's are longer.

Longer but narrower. It is an easier rout to cut (or I think so when I've done it). They are also shallower (Humbuckers need routing for the legs).

The MQ is nothing like a tapped humbucker. It is a P-90, wider coil and 2 magnets. Think of the Mountain track that it is named after. Or also early Black Sabbath (first LP). It is a fat single coil sound, and it drives the amp very nicely.

Thanks for clarifying.. I thought it was just a single coil with a cover...hahaha That shows how much I know...lol

I guess a standard BKP-90 would work better, especially if it means taking less wood out. The main reason for the MQ was becasue it's more convinient to get hold of humbucker compatible sized parts, like pickguards, but I imagine anyone cutting the hole in the gutiar could on the guard too.

How much does routing like this cost generally?

Or, you could buy a cheap router and do it yourself :lol: Probably only advised if you are good with tools I'm guessing though :P

I'm not sure if I'd do a good job, although the P-90 route doesn't look that difficult to be honest, and I was good with tools when I used them, but that's not too recently or with wood.

if the scratchplate is covering it, you don't need a perfect job anyway, just as long as you cut the scratchplate nicely. another option would be to get a custom made scratchplate, i think www.wdmusicsupplies.co.uk can custom make exact scratchplates.
