Epi So Cal
« on: July 17, 2008, 07:49:14 PM »
Anyone actually tried it out????
I was bumming around youtube and ran into this review. A while back I was thinking about getting one of these, seems like a great amp for a very reasonable price. In the end, lack of reviews and people that have actually played the thing kept me from buying it. I couldn't find anyone that actually had one to try out.
Anyway, just curious.

i tried the grainger hammerhead in soundcontrol (before they went bust) at pretty low volumes- as far as i'm aware, it's the same thing, just rebranded for sound control.

I thought it was pretty decent for the money; bear in mind, though, that the graingers were much cheaper than the epi versions- just before SC went bust the halfstack (including 4x12 cab) was going for £200! It's mainly a rock amp- cleans were decent if unspectacular, and it had a decent rock overdrive. Not really metal, but i guess it could be boosted to do it at a pinch. I remember thinking it was a bit noisier than I'd have liked though. a lot of the budget tube amps are like that, though.

Basically, if you can get one cheap enough (say, under £300 or so for the halfstack?), it's decent, but I wouldn't pay the original prices they were going for over here (£600 for the head? ).

well yeah, i mean it's a budget tube amp, but if you can get it for a similar price to a roland cube or similar (as they were going for before SC went bust), i don't see the problem.

Agreed though, the prices being charged for the epiphone versions are a bit daft.

I agree, but the cheap prices are not necessarily a bad thing. I mean, chances are if you are a serious gigging guitarist, you won't be looking down in that price range for a serious tube amp. I looked at the new Epi amps as someone FINALLY making valve amps affordable for younger guitarists that want to experience the valve side of the amp world, as well as offering a product that has room for modifications. It is something to mess around with and doesn't set you back a ton. I kinda like what Epiphone has done. :D

my point exactly (though i'm not sure how moddable is; presumably it's a lot more complex inside than a valve junior, for example).
