I've noticed quite a few people falling out of love with Blackstar pedals.  Is there a hint of Emperor's New Clothes about them?

Not for me, I Like my HT-Dual a lot it's very versatile and works nicely on it's own throught the emulated out and even Makes my (Form Home practice) POD sound dynamic.

I'm sure there is better out there but I'm happy.

An Electro Harmonix Micro Pog can be got for around £120-ish.
You can hear one here, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TNksldktvHE

It'll be my next purchase... maybe next month.

And do you prefer the BB Twinfan?  When I bought the blackstar I tried the BB plus and it blew me away, but it was £60 more than the Dual and to be fair the dual sounded pretty good.  But I've been recording and noticed a kind of - for want of a better word - plasticy thing on the attack when it's nearly set clean that I blamed on the mic pre's of my multitrack.  But now I notice it all the time.  It just seems to mess the note attack when clean and colour the tone too much on higher gain settings.

I found exactly what Tom did.  The Dual sounded great for me at first, I loved it.  Then I started to notice its heavy colouration on everything.  I noticed it most when I went to see MartinW playing at a gig.  He was using a Dual too and he sounded like I did, even when using a completely different guitar and amp  :?

Switching to the BB, with a Tubescreamer to boost it, I can get the same flexibility without the fixed Blackstar 'tone'.  It works much better for me as I like to switch guitars and let their tone come through.

FWIW, I'd never spend £120 (or any amount) just for the sake of it.  Right now, all the things I really want cost more than that, so I'd put the £120 in "The Fund".

^ yeah, i'm the same. buying something solely because you have the money for it is just asking to buy something which you don't really want or need, and which you'll probably end up having to sell on for a loss later...

I didn't have any money burning a hole, in fact I did my usual trick of justifying the purchase by getting it against a future sale of something else, but I bougt this for £130

It came yesterday, after a good setup it's a great little guitar, excellent value for money considering it has a solid top....

GT OD is quite nice, has gain on tap, but the simple boost is very nice and transparent for a mass produced product

I've just sold mine and am using a Visual Sound Jeckyll and Hyde....much better (for me).
As Dave said, it's a great sound, but more of a complete preamp than a pedal, and totally dominates your rig and guitar set up.
Their slogan is: "The sound in your head", whereas it should be: "The sound in OUR head. You will be assimilated!"

Nice to see someone mentioning Visual Sound... I thought they weren't boo-teeky enough to be viewed as cool.  8)

I have the Route 66 and H2O, and they sound good to me, but I'm pretty ignorant about the pedal world.
