Nut Measurements
« on: July 19, 2008, 11:00:44 AM »
Hey guys. I recently replaced the stock nut in my Epi Les Paul with a Tusq nut. I have never replaced a nut before, so I just kind of winged it. It worked out ok, but I can't seem to get my intonation right. It was slightly off before, but now seems to be much worse. It is especially bad on the G string. I was wondering if maybe I should sand the grooves down a bit more. What are the measurements for the grooves on the nut?

Do you mean intonation ?
This shouldn't change from the old one provided the string heights are cut to the same height.

The new nut was slotted out, but only slightly. I had to take a piece of sandpaper to it myself to deepen the grooves. Now, my intonation is off further than it was before. I have tried adjusting at the bridge, but to no avail. I noticed that there are measurements for how far the strings should be off the fretboard after sanding the nut. I was just wondering what those measurements are, and if I should deepen the grooves a bit.

The only way changing the nut should change the intonation is if it isn't fitted back in the same place as the original (i.e. if there is a gap at the end of the fingerboard, or if cleaning out the slot from the old nut you took out fingerboard wood), or if the action is very high at the nut, and even then you should be able to get the octave harmonic in.  When I fit nuts I use a set of feeler gauges and a set of nut files to set the depth.  You need to check the fret height really to set the nut up properly.  It will vary from guitar to guitar because of this.

However you say it wasn't correct in the first place, which smacks at something else.  Did you measure the scale length?  As a rough approximation, the distance from the nut to 12th fret should be the same as the distance from the 12th fret to the bridge.  I say a rough approximation because the bridge on a Les Paul is slanted to give more length to the bass strings.  If you can't adjust the G string to this length, then that will be your problem.  The only other thing I can think of is the gauge of strings you are using, but they would have to be quite extreme not to intonate.

That's interesting. I don't know why, but I was under the impression that if the nut slots were not at the correct height, that could effect the intonation. Although, the intonation on my Epi has always been off. I have tried everything to get it right but have never gotten it perfect. It does seem to be slightly worse with the new nut. Regardless, it has always been off.

Where on the neck is the intonation off - just at the 12th
Or do you notice it more in the first few frets where you play lots of open chords

If it is the latter maybe you need to look Earvana or the Buzz Feiten Tuning System

It is much more noticeable on the first few frets, especially when playing open chords on the G, B, and E strings. Chords like D and C always sound out of tune. I might have to check out one of those Earvana nuts. Are there any dealers located out here in Germany?
