sorry guys - new maple headless guitar day
« on: July 22, 2008, 04:09:14 PM »
it was on ebay, it was cheap and i had a spare cold sweat bridge.... therefore this silver machine is now mine!

this is going to be totally stripped when i get home - remove the neck and middle pickups, the cold sweat, rewire, and throwing on some feline 11s... might put a union jack sticker on possibly.

i must say the quality is a bit nicer than the steinberger spirit i have, strange as they come out the same factory.

hope i should be able to report something else in the headless guitar area soon.

Dayum!  You won't be buying my Spirit on eBay then!

Must say it does look good in the silver.  :D

i knew you'd say that Philly...

its too bad i got this first really (its taken 3 weeks to arrive with parcelforce). sorry about that, would have been nice to have the h/b neck - on the other hand, the silver is very smart as you say.

I'm nothing if not predictable!

3 weeks!!!  Will you be leaving negative feedback, or was it Parcelforce not turning up on the days they were supposed to?

Parcelforce took the guitar on a little tour of the UK so I'll leave positive feedback (if it works, which I think it will), even though the seller's communication over the whole incident left something to be desired. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt - perhaps they weren't internet savvy,

well, i was wrong ;) it might have looked nicer quality, but in fact i don't think the woods are as good as my other one. the difference is quite marked. the new hohner is darker and with less sustain.

I must admit - not knowing anything about the history - I always assumed the Hohners and Spirits were the same thing with a different logo.

The Hohners came out first didn't they?

yes, i believe the hohners came out in the mid-80s. the spirits came out in the 90s. they are made in the same factory, with slightly different appointments and finishes. the most obvious difference is the tremolo - the spirits have roller saddles, the hohners have normal ones. the switching is also more versatile on the hohners. the differences and german branding give the hohner variant the edge IMHO.

i put the tonal differences in mine down to different wood - also i changed the bridge for a fancy one on my old spirit which surely makes a difference. the fingerboard on the hohner has quite a bit more oil in than my spirit, looks better.

edit: my thoughts about the sustain are wrong i think - its impossible to choose between the two actually. its late and i'm hearing things. quality wise the two are pretty close as well

cool-ly the hohners were originally also available with twin humbuckers, with or without a trem. the come up sometimes on ebay. in the 80s they also had some quite nice colour schemes, including a diagonal schenker looking one.

You'll be catching up with me with guitars soon!  I should never have pulled them all out for you to play the first time you were here!!  You're not tempted to go with a BK HSS set then?  I now have 4 HSS sets (HD/Trilogy, SM/Sultans, RY/MMs and Crawler/P-91's - a bit different to the strat pickups but a great combination).  I would be tempted to go with the HD/Trilogy set in that guitar.
So many pickups, so little time

many of your guitars are high quality collectors pieces though phil ;) except for a couple of gibsons, the feline, and perhaps the gordon smith all mine are 'lower end'.. even if they are often pimped to the limits.

i don't think i'll go for a full HSS... was thinking this morning as i was jamming with it that i might go for an HS though. i found the middle pickup was really getting in the way due to the design of the guitar, perhaps an irish tour or trilogy then for the neck. not bonding with it so much as the red spirit, though it is a nice player and looks very classy... i expect it will be used for backup and in the studio, or perhaps i could put it on long term loan to someone who'll appricate it.

i'm practically bursting to get my hands on the other headless you've been helping me out with a bit. surely can't be long now.

I don't know about high quality - all mine are players guitars, none of them are mint and many have had changes.  I don't think I could buy a collectors guitar and put it away to keep it pristine, I want to be able to play them!

What pickups are you going to use on that?  With the graphite neck I'm sure it will sound very different to the others.

indeed sorry, should have said vintage, and in some cases valuable

its getting a single miracle man bridge. it was the only short legged ceramic pickup i had spare - didn't want to rout the body.
