Out of phase (reversed polarity humbucker)
« on: July 22, 2008, 11:33:44 PM »
Hi!My PRS STandard 24 has a VB/neck and a BKP PK/bridge.It's a 3way switch+push-push (tone knob) for coil-split.The VB/neck is original and has a polarity-reversed magnet (i guess !?it was with a 5way-switch),so,i get a out-of-phase kind of sound when the two pups are together (middle),esp. noticeable when coil-splitted.Surprisingly,i like that a lot with these pups !When i bought the guitar,i thought i would have to swap the pups and i ordered a set of BKP VH2 (a good "excuse"..).But,after i lowered the VB's height,i found out that i liked this "out of phase"sound. The VH2's arrived today. So,here is the question:how can i get the "out of phase"sound with the new VH2's (no reversed-polarity here)? Is it possible to add another push-push (volume knob) to get the"out of phase"sound when the two pups are engaged together?(Or a parallel/serie push-pull)

you can get out of phase sound with the wiring of the pickup so it might not be anything to do with a reversed magnet ( i dont actually know how prs do things though!!) its quite common when mixing brands to get out of phase sound when they are on together, you just need to reverse the hot and ground wires on one of the pickups to correct it,

or you can add a push/pull to switch  the hot and ground wires around at will

go down about 90% to the bottom of this page for a phase reversal switch

Thanks,Wez 8)!If the neck-pu has a reversed-polarity,do you know how it will affect the sound when the 2 pu's are together?Because,if it's not supposed to affect the sound (only for the hum-cancelling),then,it's the wiring being "out of phase".

Tim does make pickups with the magnet reversed in the neck for PRS's.  You just need to specify that when you order.  Without this, you will lose the humbucking effect of the split sounds.
So many pickups, so little time
