Hi there,

a colleague at work is looking to buy her 12 year old son an electric guitar for christmas. She's looking for under £100, including some kind of amplifier.

Now, I know that in amongst all the Gibsons, Fenders, Tylers and PRS's and custom builds that inhabit this board, I guess we never consider the other end of the spectrum. But I said I'd help her out, so any suggestions?

I suggested checking ex-demo and 2nd hand, as well as Squier and Epiphone - when I was 12 I didnt care about pickups, wood and whatnot - as long as it looked like the guitars Oasis had, I really didnt care! :P

So, any ideas where to get a decent guitar at a decent price?

You can pickup "all in one" packages in places like argos. They are cheap and you get an amp and a guitar.

aye, thats what we were looking at. Im just wondering if there is a way to get away from all the Encore guitars, although I appreciate that that is hard within the price budget... :(

how much is that jackson rock star package?? do they even sell it over there?

i dont think it's 100 quid, but with that she will earn the title of the coolest mom on the planet and might spawn another paul gilbert =)

yea, so did it.. but i think it's way out of the budget. shame that i'm not in the UK. i'd give 'er my practice marshall so the kid can use it.

What about the local Loot?

There's usually a fair amount of cheap stuff in there that should fit the bill. You could offer to go through the ad's and mark the one's you think look like a good deal. Maybe. Just an idea.

And most of the time they are returned or sent to guitar shops to be fixed/set up.

don't spend less than £200 on a guitar for a beginner. it will be RUBBISH and it won't inspire the kid to play, (s)he'll get fed up and quit, and it will be a waste of £100 that yu spent on a cr@ppy guitar. A beginner needs something they can really play and get to know.

Yes, maybe, but £200 is a fair amount of money for some parents to be spending on a christmas present.

Besides, I started on a £120 guitar, yes it wasnt great, but I was 12. It was hardly like I was checking the fretwork and the neck profile. And 10 years later and I still havent quit.

There are quite a few Yamaha's going on E.Bay at the moment and they are known for being excellent quality for a begginer. The amp would have to be one of those mini marshall stacks, they're on E.Bay at "buy it know" for just over £20 so if your friends could stretch just a little bit more(£20 or so ) they will have a really nice start up kit with brilliant resale value if things dont go according to plan.
I learnt on a £25 nylon string s**t heap with a glued neck when I was about 12 and now at 26 I still love the guitar with a passion and I feel I have earnt the right to play really cool ,high quality equipment. I always felt that with guitar playing it was always instant love or no love. Regardless of your tool, they've all got a little bit of magic about them.
