How will Rebel yell bridge do?
« on: July 25, 2008, 07:08:56 AM »
Playing a mahogany bodied Dean ML with flame maple top, set mahogany neck with
rosewood fretboard.  I play mostly instrumental rock, and spend most of my time playing leads.
Im looking for something with a good, good, good fat midrange and good low end, something that induces
great harmonics and sustain, and well work well with alternate picking passages as well as legato
runs.  I'm not that great, but I'm fascinated with really fast, accurate, and articulate guitar playing.
I'm playing through a Cornford.
How would they do? :aww:

I've moved the rebell yell around all my guitars; it doesnt really sound like the pickup you're after.  Its got a lot of upper mids, I think with the intention of cutting through keboards in the mix.

If you want something with a more balanced mid range and a chunky bottom id go for the diver, although in an all mahog guitar I'd be very tempted to try the cold sweat.  I had RY's in my all mahog les paul and tim suggested cold sweats to cut through better, apparently the ceramic mag suits much better.  You're guitar will sound HUGE and CHUNKY.

I would go with Emeralds or Crawlers.  You basically have a Les Paul configuration (with the maple cap), and both of these give a great sound in an LP.  The Rebel Yell's have a boosted upper mid, which gives great harmonics in an all mahogany guitar (I have them in a PRS Standard), but might be a bit bright in a maple capped one.  You could also look at the Abraxas set, which sound great in my Hamer Sunburst (mahogany, maple cap, mahogany neck, rosewood fingerboard).
So many pickups, so little time

Nailbombs sound awesome in Les Paul style guitars.

Is the rebel yeah opposite what Im looking for?   My main standing frequency ranges are in the mids, does teh rebel yell have good mids?  and what of its treble?

I have a Nailbomb bridge and a Rebel Yell set.

They are both awesome for leads.  The Nailbomb has more lows and a little less mids, and the Rebel Yell has more mids and upper mids.  Both absolutely scream and are great for leads.  As far as leads go, there isn't a terribly huge difference between the two in a LP - I could use my Rebel Yell or Nailbomb for a lot similar material and be comfortable with the tone.

If you play more hard rock and want a killer, bright tone, great for flashy style leads, then get the Rebel Yell.  It was designed for Steve Stevens for a reason... listen to his Rebel Yell demos in the players section - they really do sound like that for me too.

If you want something a little meatier and darker more suited for metal go with the Nailbombs.

I will say the Rebel Yell set in a Les Paul is my favorite guitar & pickup combo.  But the Nailbomb are probably the best sounding lead tone of any pickup, that is if the Rebel Yells are not, and I am convinced I could pull off a killer lead tone with them in plywood.
Real men turn their volume to 11!

Rebel Yells + Les Paul = the Ultimate Rock Pickup.

Choice of pickups for lead work can sometimes lead into too much thinking  :D

For what you're looking for - good, fat mids and low end - I would suggest that it wouldn't be the RY or Emerald pups.

Both of those give good, warm low end and are fantastic for lead but perhaps won't give 'fat' mids. I know from experience that the Emeralds provide great punchy mids that cut through the mix but there is an emphasis on upper mids with those as well.

It might be that Holy Diver or Crawler pups will give you the fat mids that you're looking for.

Here's an example of what I mean about punchy mids in an Emerald clip. The first part is the neck pup, as is the first part of the bridge, and the rest is the bridge pup.
