Vintage Neck HB to acompany my Nailbomb Bridge HB?
« on: August 14, 2008, 12:08:08 PM »
Hi there folks,

in my mighty custom guitar (warmoth parts, korina body with maple top, wenge-neck with pao-ferro board) sits an also very mighty BKP nailbomb humbucker in the bridge position.

i now want to put a new neck pu in there, and would love to get a really soft, clean, classic vintage sound, reminiscent of (yes, i dare say it:) Slash's classic sounds in sweet child o' mine - days..

knowing that the man uses alnico II low output pups, the following BKP buckers are what i am looking to right now:

- Stormy Monday (tone-wise should this be the thing, but maybe too low in output to match the NB??)
- The Mule (Alnico II or IV??)
- VHII (somewhat hotter, maybe a better match to the nailbomb?)

What must be considered is the balance between the new neck humbucker and the nailbomb in the bridge!
Might the SM be too low in output compared to the NB?
Might the VHII otherwise be too shrill or thin to letting me get the tones i am after?

I'd rather like to get thick, beautiful, woody, syrupy tones from my new neck pup..
Should not be too muddy too though!

Oh my.. please guys, please Tim:
Give me some advice for what BKP to go for!

Thanks a bunch,
Shagga

^ Good find, and I still agree with my original thinking: Cold Sweat.

ah, thank you guys! :)

noodleplugerine: i read through the whole thread you linked, but i am still not really convinced on any exact model..
so many possibilities, so many opinions.. :D

seems to be common believe, that the buckers from the "vintage" series are all to low in output to match the NB, right?

i still am kind of intrigued by the VHII humbucker.. do you think this one will do a good "slash job"?
i also heard a great sounding demo of the Stormy Monday on the tube, but if it really is too low.. who knows!?

TwilightOdyssey: The Cold Sweat you mention seems to be the exact opposite to what i am looking for.. at least from the description on the BKP site..

The descriptions on the page is really just for bridge models.

For a true Slash sound that pairs in output with the Nailbomb, I think your best bet is to get an AII Stormy Monday wound to bridge specs. Talk to Tim about this. Or you could get the neck model and just use a booster to compensate for the output difference.
