In use a miracle man, and I can get pretty much any dirty tone you care to mention out of it. I mean totally brutally nasty tones. How far is it from the strings?

Hi, thanks guys. Well i'm pleased to say it's panic over and i'll keep the MM for now. After tweaking my amp settings to accomodate the new pickup (i shoulda known it would need some EQ changing) the pickup sounds great. I've broken in the new strings and dropped them half a step. I don't think the new heavier guage strings were helping matters much but now they're dropped it's sounding way cooler. I spend a good amount of time tweaking and tweaking and tweaking the pickup height whilst dialling in some new settings and it's sounding pretty awesome. I A/B'd my SG with a stock Tokai Les Paul and the SG now sounds way beefer than the Les Paul, now that's impressive. I was however expecting a little more output/power.

It took a good hour or two to get used to how clear and defined the notes were and exactly how tight this pickup is. After 5 years of playing Gibson Alnicos in the SG, it definately takes some time to get used to something so different. Back to the tightness and note clarity...I think this pickup will only show how great is it when I get to band practice and paly in a full band situation. The extra clarity and tightness is gonna slice like a motherf*cker right thru the mix (or so I think/hope!). I think this is where it will shine most.

One last queation before I get back to pissing off the neighbours, would adjusting the individual pole piece screws be of any benefit? I was thinking of taking them a little higher, would this actually do much?

Cheers guys, back to beer and riffs...

Will

There was a topic regarding polepiece height, the verdict was generally to keep them flush.

I have my Miracle Men mighty close. they rock and scream all day long :D

the miracle man has 2 weird characteristics that some people may not like at first:
1. the different response on each string: it's very bright and sharp on the higher strings,  very dark and chunky on the lower strings
2. it may sound too boxy and focused on low volumes. the louder you play it, the better it sounds... it gets bigger and bigger and a lot more open sounding when you play it really loud (almost like a tube amp!)

I didn't care too much when I installed it at the first time
just got impressed with the extreme tightness
but when I played it at studio... wow! it made my guitar roar like no other pickup did :D

Yer I would agree with that.  I bought a epi going back a year or two of the bay  with miracle man pickups in.  Plugged in and thought whats all the fuss about with these pickups.  A couple of days later I was thinking WOW.
Would say I perfer the vintage ones a little more now but their great pickups.

Too bad you don't like it too much. I am very happy with mine, I think the sound improved a lot. But my SG was very middy to start with.

My guitar had the 498T originally.

Whatever BKP you get, be sure to exchange the potentiometers as well.
Current BKPs: Miracle Man, Nailbomb, Juggernaut, VHII
Past BKPS: Holy Diver, Trilogy Suite, Sinner, Black Dog

Just got in from band practice and it would appear my predication was right...these things really do sound at their best when the amp's cranked. Wow is all I have to say, they sound so much more powerful than the stock 498T, more output, warmer, tighter, beefier x100! Very, very nice.
