I can't come up with any funny names but I worked for a company that used a computer system that allocated references based upon the first two letters of the surname of a client and then the initials. All was going well until we had a client called Mr N T Cunningham. Trouble is, no-one seemed to notice until a letter had gone out with the reference on it.The system was hurriedly amended.

I once knew a young fella whose overly republican and stupid parents had named him "Glasbánisoir", a concatenated version of "Glas, Bán agus Oir", or green, white and gold, for what they thought the colours of the Irish flag were.

Pointing out that the name, rendered as one word, meant nothing was unwelcome. Pointing out that the last stripe on the Irish flag is orange went even worse,  and finally explaining that everyone was destined to call thier son "Glassblower" for the rest of his days eventually had me asked to leave the house.

Evil, Evil, Evil...

I used to work with a guy called Richard Head, and he used to ask everyone to call him Dick!  This was many years ago before the dickhead phrase was used in the UK, but we were a multinational company and seeing the reaction of the Americans was always a gem.

I also used to work with a woman called Eleanor Krapohl (for all of you who don't know the last name is pronounced krap-ole).  There were many brown hatter jokes going around when her name was mentioned!!

I've been trying to remember all day the anecdote my brother told me about. His firm had dealings with a Dutch guy by the name of Anker (yes, spelled like that!). You can guess what his first initial was!

Also, I was reminded of a rather unfortunately named, although very well respected co-author of a lot of crystallography software. He goes by the name of Alexei Vagin, and for those who don't know how scientific journals work, almost all the papers with his name on (and indeed references authorship within programs) have Vagin A. in the author list.
Yes, I am that purile :)
