Lets Talk Capacitors
« on: August 31, 2008, 10:49:48 PM »
Im in the middle of finalising a orderlist of parts for my EC-1K and Horton Tempest mods, but im a bit confused on what Capacitors i should use;

Im either gonna use theese:
Capacitor - Allparts Vitamin Q - 400v
http://www.allparts.uk.com/capacitor-allparts-vitamin-400v-p-2254.html?p=product

or theese:
Capacitor - Sprague Orange Drop - 200v
http://www.allparts.uk.com/capacitor-sprague-orange-drop-200v-p-2270.html?p=product

Or should i just get a Ceramic Disc like theese ones???

Whats the diffrence in tone??? And whats the diffrence in tone with the diffrent values???

Thanks again.

the Vit Q's on that website you linked to all 'repros', not real-deal Vit Q's.  for the price they are asking, you can get NOS Vit Q's.  I have a contact in the US that I buy all my NOS caps from - PM me if you want his email address.

I've had a number of NOS Bumblebees and Sprague 160Ps from his, all bang on spec and sounded great.  Currently waiting for a .047uF Sprague 160P from this guy for my LP jr.

Just bought .047uF for my telecaster, from BKP Shop with the 0.001uF... They are the correct ones, right? :? hehehehehehe
There is much difference between the Vit-Q from the normal? I'm a d!¢k for electronic

What a great song-title!!

I use orange drops at the moment if I do any replacing - they seem fine for me.

I recently put a... a... (Jonathan help me here, I bought the caps from you, and you didn't have any 47 that day) a .033 (?) in my tele as a tone cap. It was in-between the "gibson" 22 and the "fender" 47 values anyway.

As I understood it, Jonathan was saying that putting a lower value tone cap in a tele (the 47 is more usual) would make it growl a bit more like a Les Paul. And I have to say, my experience seems to bear that out - I might even try a 22 next... :D

I'm not quite sure about that, the higher the cap value the more treble you roll off when you turn down the tone control.  So maybe Jonathan meant you retain more treble (hence growl rather than mud?) with a lower value cap.

But in theory it makes no difference when the tone is on 10 (although I'm sure people with "Eric Johnson ears" will say they can tell).

Even for 4-way switch these are the correct values?

Yeah Fernando, the 4-way switch douesn't make any difference to the cap values.

With the high-output Piledrivers and the 0.047 cap, it will get pretty dark when you turn down the tone control - but I like that, because you can get a "wah" effect by turning the control quickly  :) .  And the 0.001 will help keep the treble when you turn down the volume control.
