Orange Tiny Terror is bad ass
« on: September 01, 2008, 08:57:23 PM »
Hey guys I thought I would add to all that you have written here by telling you a bit about my amp. I play an Orange Tiny Terror, and I think its one of the best sounding smaller rigs for its price. If you want a practice amp for playing out loud as opposed to headphones then I dont think there is a better sounding Amp for the job than this one. This thing can hold up to any kind of music. I am a rock-Metal player and I was using headphones on a vox amplifier prior to buying this one, and any of you who live in condos or quiet neighborhoods know the pain of wanting to hear yourself out loud, but not being able to because you dont want cops knocking on your door. This thing is a 15 watt head but you can switch it to 7 watts for lower volume. The thing that I like about it is that it is an honest amp in the sense that when you turn the thing up loud ,and it actually gets quite loud, you still sound the same. My vox sounded different tonally when I used headphones and when I played it loud or quiet. The bad part in that is when you need to show your skills to someone and Uh Oh you sound like cr@p on their cranked rig because you are used to the tones from your headphones or from a quieter amp. When you get used to this baby you can wail away, and if you are accustomed to doing that anyway this amp gets loud as hell enough to make studios shake. Anyway I just wanted to put the tiny terror out here so if any of you had questions about it you might be able to find some answers. Cheers

I've only ever been impressed with the Tiny Terror when I've heard Rob Chappers playing it, though i guess the one he has, has had the bias issue fixed on it and thus sounds amazing. which is what I'd have done right away if I bought one.

How does it sound when it's really, really quiet? I'm utterly tired of having to play through guitar rig and headphones, it never sounds right! even a Roland cube 20x sounds far better...

I've been considering one over an AC15 for blues jamming at home.

Problem being, the tiny terror doesnt have a speaker (although i do have an MG412), and less features too.

I always thought that less features = more time for playing guitar. Since getting rid of my POD XT I have spent more time playnig than I have tweaking (no innuendo intended there).
I think I hate being indecisive.

My thoughts on that were, if i want them, i can get them with pedals. But i'm still not sure!

The AC15 is obviously quite a different sounding amp compared to the TT, extensive testing will be done!

Mine sounded fizzy, like most valve amps do  :(

The TT is a nice amp for sure.  I couldn't get on with the tone of EL84s so I sold mine.  I seem to prefer the tone of bigger valves, even at lower volumes.

A Tiny Terror sounds great when:
1. it's turned up 1/2 on the master (=loud)
2. Guitar=>good cable=>amp (no FX whatsoever disturbing the signal)

This was too limited for me which is why I sold it. Still I liked muchos the rock crunch you could get out of the little toaster.

Dude I know your pain with the headphones. Something I noticed when I played with headphones is the sound was a little more compressed than when I played it out loud. The TT is so good sounding when I play it at 7 watts and volume on low, sounds even better cranked. It has good amounts of gain. Obviously you will have to turn the volume down when you have the gain cranked, but it sounds so good I mean I bought it over a Mesa Boogie F50 the Mesa was going for 700 usd (Like 50 GBP just kidding lots of disrespect for American economy here), Anyway I got the TT and Cabinet brand new for 970 plus tax. My setup right now includes a Metal Zone distortion (freaking versatile) a BBE stomp sonic (the most useful Pedal ever) and a digitech delay ( the biggest piece of cr@p ever ) and it sounds really good. I nail Guns n roses and Metallica, and all the older stuff and in between. Rob Chappers was the one that told me to buy one when I wrote him. Also he sent me here Cant go too wrong with it. But you do need some effects as in most dry setups. I have seen guys pull the best blues tones out of it dry though. And best of all it is a $%&#in british amp and the British make the best amps in the world. American Amps will never compare.

I have posted this item before in a previous posting on TT:

Anyone with a Tiny Terror may want to check the biasing of their amp.

I have an early Made in Korea model and the EL84 biasing was way off.

(Factory fitted EL84's were JJ tesla's)

Orange use the 120 ohm bias resistor for both 15 Watt and 7watt settings. When you flip the switch all you are doing is changing the winding and lowering the voltage from around 325V (15W) to about 240V (7W).

In theory there should be 12Watts on the Plates of the EL84's for optimum sound and value longevity. The biasing on the plates of mine coincidently measured, 15 watts in the 15 watt mode and 8 watts in the 7 watt mode.. One was therefore running too hot and the other is running too cold. (Not good)

On my particualr "Made In Korea" model I have since replaced the factory fit 120 ohm resistor for a (150 Ohm + 10 Ohm is series = 160 Ohm). This get the biasing correct in the 15 watt mode.

Then put 68 Ohm resistor in parallel with the 160 Ohm combination to get the biasing correct in the 7 watt mode.

To do this I have replaced the (15 watt - 7 watt) SPDT switch with a DPDT variant. This allows the normal switching, plus being able to switch in the 68 Ohm resistor at the same time as you go to the 7 watt setting.

I use mine for bedroom practice and played through a 1 X 12 Orange cab, standing on an Gamma Auralex riser, and loaded with a EVH G12M it now sounds bloody awesome. All that horrible fizz at high gain settings that people complain about is gone too!!

Cheers
