MUSIC TASTES LINK TO PERSONALITY
« on: September 05, 2008, 08:16:27 AM »

Some of this article makes sense, but then I read the summary at the bottom and it just seems like a load of rubbish.

Maybe it just doesn't apply the same to musicians

What do you think?

Not hard working!!!!???

bar-stewards!!
I'm currently commuting to work, where I will pick up a dewar with samples in, travel across London, hop on the train to France, travel across Paris, hop on a train to Grenoble, spend 24 hours between Sat morning and Sun morning solidly collecting data (I hope!), hope back on a train to get back to the office on Sunday late afternoon.

And then I'm off on Thursday to Diamond in Oxfordshire for another 24 hour shift.

And they say we're not hard working?

****s!

All I see is lots of "Low/High Self esteem" "Creative" "not hardworking" "Gentle" "at ease"

That's hardly a way to describe people. Hell, if any genre is all the above, then everyone would fit into every genre :s

What about if you like lots of different kinds of music?

A lot of those contradict, and you wouldnt think one person could like some at the same time. But they do.

You can still take the survey on the website that the story links to, and there's a space at the bottom where you can enter a short description of your level of musical interest/education. I agree that it's pretty vague and self-contradictory.

I'm sure there are broad correlations between someone's personality traits and the types of cultural entertainment they enjoy, but whether they're capable of being neatly compartmentalised into "music taste" is another thing entirely. For a start (using the survey's list of genres) Oasis, the Cure, Babyshambles, Primal Scream, the Durutti Column and the Smiths all fall into the "indie" category; but they hardly have massive similarities in style and lyrical content, so it would be foolish to expect self-identified fans of those bands to have similar personality traits.

agreed. it was pretty cool, until i noticed that several styles i liked (e.g. classical and heavy metal) had some opposites. I must say, though, that i didn't find that people who liked classical and metal were similar, because if you ask me, they're quite similar styles of music (at least the metal i listen to)... a lot of metal is like classical with heavy guitars.

It's a study... They gather information, find similarities, and narrow out what falls out of the norm, leaving just a general picture. For what it is, I agree with most of the results.

It also shows that all soul has gone out of blues. High self-esteem is the anti-blues.

Exactly what i was going to say. I love all types of music, but the blues is where it is at for me most, and i have a very low self-esteem lol

+1

Of course it's easy to pick holes in the theory by giving specific examples which don't fit, and of course there are lots of other factors, but generally it seems pretty reasonable to me.

When they reported it on the BBC there were lots of mock-shocked expressions and comments like "Heavy Metal fans? Gentle?"  But we all know metal fans in general are not Glen Benton.  Most of us are actually pretty geeky and polite, at least in my experience.

They also seemed shocked that Dance music fans are "not gentle", but that also makes sense to me.  A lot of clubbers seem to be manic, noisy and in-your-face (when they're in the mood for dancin') - and that, to me, is not gentle.
