80's Lead Speakers?
« on: September 07, 2008, 08:44:06 AM »
So, my Holydiver BareKnuckles are about to go into my Carvin Superstrat. I'm trying to think what speakers to put in my EarCandy Buzzbomb to get that awesome 80's Lead tone (think George Lynch, EVH, Warren DeMartini, etc.). What suggestions do you all have? I'm thinking Celestion G12-65s, Weber 1265s, or Eminence Lynch Box V12s.

You have the power!

Did you ask Tim at Ear Candy?  If you already have the Buzzbomb I would look at a set of Scumback speakers from Southbay Ampworks.  They make the best vintage sounding celestions around.  The M-75-LHDC would have the g12-65 sound in spades.
So many pickups, so little time

Yeah, I looked at the Scumbacks -- they look sweet! Will have to give 'em a ring on Monday.

What amp are you using?

I'm using a Carvin V3 with JJ EL34s.

Nice setup!

The first thing I would do to get that kind of tone is swap out any 12AX7s in the preamp stage with NOS 5751s. That is instant 80s metal tone, especially if you have a high gain amp. You might also wanna swap the JJs for Mullard or Tungsols. If you have the room for it, you might wanna look into 6CA7s instead of EL34s altogether. Putting an OD in front of the amp, even if it is high gain, will go a long way to getting that tone, too. Just make sure you back off on the preamp gain. You might even wanna just boost the clean channel. Finally, put a BOSS GE-7 in the FX loop for a solo boost, set for a small mid boost.

If you have a decent cab already, you might not need to go any further than that. Yes, the Scumbacks will most definitely improve your tone, but I wouldn't put them on the "must have" list for Lynch/DeMartini/EVH type of thing.

Hope this helps.

I would totally disagree with TO, But I like to because his tone sucks anal beads.

Try a Boss EQ pedal with a frown or  an MXR Dist+ goosing any Marshall type amp set to a crunchy sound.
Into a set of G12M25s either Celestion or Scumback if you have the cash.

As for tubes go with Mullard NOS or Mazda Grey Plate 12AX7's go with the Mazda if u want more gain Mullard for less,
they both virtually sound identical.

As for Power Amp tubes.. Svetlana Winged C's all the way.

You will also need some spandex pants to complete the tone and a sock stuffed into your crotch area.

This setup will give u balls to the walls uber crunch think Lynch and Warren all day long.
I'd also suggest a Metro Amp 12xxx Series Amp as the best amp for this type of tone.

I've gotten pretty close by turning the gain on my amp to 3, and then tossing an MXR EQ pedal in front of it, boosting 200 Hz and 1 KhZ, then cutting everything and bossting the whole signal 16 dB :)

My current tubes are Svetlana EL34s already, is that the same thing as a Winged C?

Thanks again for the help.

Svetlana have broken into two companies I believe the cheaper ones just say "Svetlana" the better ones have a logo like this:
=C=

either are pretty good but the =C= are better.
