The Mini-mule
« on: September 07, 2008, 05:13:48 PM »
Hi, I’m new around here, though not new to BKPs, and was wondering if one of you more knowledgeable gents could help me out with any information on the BKP mini-mule.

I know BK used to make a mini-bucker based on the mule, as I came but a phone call away from ordering 3 for my Seymour Duncan equipped warmoth strat a few years ago. In the end I didn’t do it as I couldn’t justify it at the time but since then one of the SDs has died and I was never totally convinced by them anyway, so I’ve decided to replace the lot.

However, it now appears the mini-mule is no longer in full production, or at least it’s not in the online shop. Does anyone know if they are still available, or if not, would they be available as a custom order?

In fact any info on them would be much appreciated. So, if there are any Mini-mule owners still around; how do they sound in comparison to the full size mule? Are they the same size as the mini-buckers found on firebirds or on the les paul deluxe, or are they all the same?

Anyway, thanks in advance and sorry this post is so long (I’ve become obsessed)

I've read something about here but can't remember...
I believe you should call Tim tomorrow and ask him, perhaps he still does it :D

Tim has stopped doing them due to a lack of demand for them and for the simple reason that he isn't very keen on them himself.
You could send him the SDs and have him re-wind them to BKP specs.
I too use chicken as a measurement.

I can answer that bit - Firebird and LP Deluxe pickups are exactly the same size, although there are differences internally (the LP Deluxe has polepieces, for a start).

As the guys have already said, the Mini-Mule is apparently no longer available but I've only read that on the forum, not heard it from BKP directly.  Might be worth making that phone call...

(Which of the three SD mini-bucker models have you got, just out of interest?)
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

I’ve just received a reply for Tim, unfortunately you guys were right, BKP no longer produce the mini-mule. :(

I’m now kicking myself for not ordering them when I had the chance. (there is defiantly a mule related joke in there somewhere)

On the up side Tim has suggested the possibility of having the current SDs rewound. So I guess it’s a choice between a BK rewind or SD antiquities. I wonder what you guys would suggest.

 Mr Philly Q, the SDs are as follows. Bridge = SM-2. Middle = SM-1. Neck = SM-1

Thanks for the replies guys.

I wonder what the rewind specs are like, would be very interesting. I would like to try the Firebird route sometime

Well, not only will rewinds be cheaper, but Tim will be able to wind them exactly how you want.  :)

I never tried the SM-1, but I had the SM-2 and SM-3 in my old Hamer Eclipse.  I always found the SM-2 a bit harsh (maybe due to the ceramic magnet), but the SM-3 was a nice neck pickup.  But then I think minibuckers in general make nice neck pickups!
