LMAO - who is commissioning that and WHY?

Also, what the hell is it exactly (aside from being a "guitar").

(sorry if this has already been asked)

They are not exactly "in the works yet" so I don't know if I should post here, but I've taken the first baby steps towards a custom 7. Maybe a half-twin six aswell, we'll see. I've spoken to Doug at Soulmate guitars for a quote on my specs, and the guys at Graphtech for the best midi/piezo solution, and I've found dealers for all the hardware. Now I just need the bodies, which I may build myself but that does delay the process quite a bit. I'll keep you posted when it goes anywhere.

Soulmate made one of my fave guitars ever:

I'm looking forward to great things here! Keep us posted!

I would commit murder for that guitar.  Wow, my mouth dropped open when i saw it and a hushed "whaaa..." trailed from my mouth.  That is outstanding, I FVCKING LOVE BUCKEYE BURL!!!!!

Its a lap steel - a slide guitar
Think of blues, Ry Cooder, maybe a bit of Aerosmith and you'll get some of the picture

Got most of the neck carved today!

http://oli.doom-metal.com/8string/8string_neck_volute.jpg bonus pic of the volute too :) You can see (half way up the headstock) the join of the scarf joint- it's not the best, as it was my first, but it should clean up to look better.

Wow, i guess i have never really seen a lapsteel before.  I know them by name very well, but it just looked so odd to me.  It looked like i child's instrument, what with the color and odd (to my eyes) proportions.  Interesting.

its  a fun side project rather than a serious commission, but it is definately a serious instrument. i usually do them to use up spare parts but this one is ending up higher spec because its been spoken for.  Lapsteels were popular  in the art deco period so thats were i went with the shape.  the colour might not match that theme but whatever

It's the neck for the 8string i posted on the previous page, so that singlecut idigbo body, and the fretboard is cocobolo- but you probably guessed that from the photo :) Out of the 3 fretboard woods that i've worked with (Ebony, Mac. Ebony and Cocobolo), i prefer working with cocobolo, so i think i'm gonna use it again, it looks really nice too :)

lol, i guess that makes sense.  The proportions seem a little more normal on the JPG you just offered up, but i suppose that is only because the neck looks so ridiculously wide - with the fretboard being particularly thin - on the one you are making.  Whereas with the one in the JPG the fretboard extends to the edge of the neck like a regular guitar.

I've currently got a couple of bits in the works, an 8 string:

It has got the other half of the neck laminates i used for the fanned-fret 7, but this one isn't fanned this time :)

Got a 4 string neck-through bass that's coming along nicely- flame maple with walnut laminates, and a mahogany body with a paduk cap.

When funds permit, i'll build another fanned-fret, probably a 6 string (but with individual saddles this time), although i'd really like to build an extended range bass..... so many ideas, so little money!!!

Think i need to sell some gear off to fund all these projects! (anyone want a Jackson 7 string? :))

Wow, that looks awesome! Can't wait to see the finished product/it's progress :)

some follow the fretboard, others dont - it doesnt really alter how they play as you dont ever hold it by the neck... i reckon my shape is very empire states building

Cheers :) I look forward to seeing the progress on your conklin too! Mine will be tuned to F#, but hopefully at some point I can have a play with a high-A guitar (or maybe string it up that way, with a octave4plus string for the high A). It's certainly exciting to be heading down the extended range :)

Viva la 8 string!

Yeah man! Thanks :) What's an octave4plus string though? + what length is your scale? I guess the octave4plus has something to do with this but if that's much over a standard 24.75 I don't think you'll get a high A going without it snapping very quickly.
