What pickup
« on: September 12, 2008, 10:06:24 PM »
Hi, this is a great forum; so much helpful informations!

I am curious, what Bareknuckle pickup would be best to achieve this kind of sound (in attachment).

But I also want to play songs like Death's Crystal Mountain and others from Symbolic album, and Carcass, Necrotiscism album with it?? I want my seventh string to be not muddy, I want to hear it ( i switch tunning back and forth between B standard and A standard).

I have a Dean Razorback 7, i think its made of mahogany wood.

Many Thanks,

B0wey :D

That clip has the sound of direct input so you won't get that sort of sound unless you like playing through a Line6 modeller.

In terms of sound that's the sort of sound that a Ceramic Warpig or a Ceramic Nailbomb bridge would do you.

I say Ceramic as I think it would be the right sort of thing for cutting through a big slab of wood like a Razorback.

For a neck Pup it's more down to your personal taste than anything else (do you like to have a powerhouse in the bridge and a more mellow Pup in the neck or to simply go the whole hog (no pun intended) with a Warpig.)
Something important to consider is the Cold Sweat, which has had some glowing reviews when paired with the pickups I mentioned for the bridge.
I too use chicken as a measurement.

C-Pig was my first thought for Crowbar tones.

Yep you'll have to specify Ceramic when you order, if I remember correctly.

The standard Warpig is AlNiCo5 although for a seven string it could be AlNiCo7 as it would cut more for the bass B string.

AlNiCo magnets, if you didn't know already, are numbered by their formulation. The higher the number generally the higher the output and the brighter the pickup (having more cut).
Increasing the number of winds counteracts this which is why lower output pickups are generally brighter than a powerhouse with the same magnet formulation.

The ceramic magnet imparts a higher output and more cut than the AlNiCo formulations.

I think that that is correct but someone, please, correct me if I am wrong.

Note so sure about that mate. Increasing output generally results in more bass response - for example Alnico 8 has massive, often untameable low end.
Ceramic magnets are far more efficient, tracking the bass frequencies a lot more precisely, resulting in tighter low end.

Thank you guys

What pup do you recommend for the neck position, to complement the C-pig in the bridge, to be balanced so to speak?

I like milky, smooth lead tone, with fluid sound (I need it for legato stuff) and with great cleans?  I like more vintage tone, not so much this modern :)

I have one more question  :P

Is the c-pig hotter than emg 85/81 and is it more tight than those two?

If it is, I hope its more alive.

Thanks

The Warpig neck should do you well. It's a great match output-wise, and has a more vintagey feel than some of the other contemporary neck pickups.

I'm not too sure on the EMGs output, but the c-pig definitely seems comparable. A hell of a lot more "alive" though. You won't ever go back to EMGs after trying Bareknuckles, put it that way.

I've heard that Holy Diver is good. Cold Sweat appears to gain raves among the players here too.

People also say good things about Black Dog, Rebel Yell and VII. Maybe you should head to the Players section, to hear clips. I am sure there are many clips out there.

edit: I am talking about neck PU's, of course.

The c-pig is about as powerfull and about as tight as an 81. The pig is much heavier, grinding, far far bigger sounding and generally, as has been said, more 'alive' (tonnes of lovely harmonics in there and less compression) and it all adds up to a pickup that seems more powerfull than the 81, which is extremely high gain, but somewhat thin and depthless and sterile (by comparison at least: I rather like the 81, but its no C-Pig).

Whoa, thanks! :o

As for the neck pu recommendation, I see that you like Warpig and Cold Sweat? Which will suit my needs better out of these two? Or mybe some other pickup?

I want creamy, nasal tone with great cleans.

Thanks for all your answers!

Nasal to me sounds like my Warpig neck.

The only worry is in whether you can understand that it is actually more like a jazz pickup than you would expect so it isn't as crushing and it has a quite rounded sound. It does a fantastic Frank Zappa impression but it can get lost some of the time with very high gain so you'll probably need to compensate with some EQ.

It is a really nice pickup but it is very different to the bridge, which is all-out heaviness.

I'd recommend you used the middle position for cleans and the neck for a clean lead tone while using the bridge for the all out distortion as it loves that.
