Crawler vs Evolution vs Breed
« on: September 15, 2008, 09:48:20 AM »
I did a couple simple simular recordings to compare some pickups.
The funny thing is that I did it with a sound that I donīt usually play with or quite the style I play either, why? I donīt know It just hapened that way..
I took away all effects, and turned the gain down, so that the pickups really should shine through. But to be honest I think the difference between them is a little bit more than it sounds here.
well-well, its interesting though to hear that the Crawler sound more and stronger than the "high-output" Evolution (which I donīt like.) The "definition" is also by far better compared to the Evo.
The Crawler is in my lespaul and the Dimarzios is in my Ibanez Jem 555.
The Breed pickup has more in common with the crawler than Evolution i think.

Pickups:
BKP Crawler bridge
Dimarzio Evolution bridge
Dimarzio Breed bridge

Both the rythm and solo guitar is made with the same pickup.

The Breed was bland, but I actually think the Evo sounded pretty good. There was just so much more body and life in the Crawler track, which is no surprise to any of us.

Wow, the Crawler was miles ahead of the other two. Great tone!
The Evolution was ok but lacked the life of the Crawler and seemed a bit dark with lack of clarity.
The was just horrendous. Utterly blahhh!

Good playing by the way. :D

You could tell the Crawler was the better out of the 3. The Evolution sounded really 'bland' and didn't have as much dynamics as the Crawler.

Yes, Bareknuckle sounds much "more" canīt describe it in a better word.
The Evolution is a "oups it was tough but I think I got away with it, but I donīt take any chances"-pickup.
The Breed is a "Hmmm, that was fun, manby I can play a little bit more"-pickup
The Crawler is a "Yeah, this is how they should make pickups!"-pickup.

So Iīm planning on getting Bareknuckles for the Ibanez 555 Jem aswell to get the final touch. (I like the Breed which has a rich and full tone and not a pain in the high freq-area, but something is missing and I donīt know what, maby a BKP!)

A common suggestion for Ibanez basswood is Nailbomb bridge and a Coldsweat neck, but Im not totally convinced about Nailbomb bridge, might it be to hard in the treble area? has it got enough middle? (Pickups in this area wich I donīt like is for example Dimarzio Evolution, Gibson T500) Iīm into shred/rock and I like this kind of tone:

So, Iīm not shure about the nailbomb bridge and its described "Cut" but at the same time I absolute LOVE this sound (and clip) by this young dude playing on Nailbombs:

Maby Iīm totally of topic now and should write in the pickup-department instead?

i thought the crawler sounded better on the backing but the lead sounded better on the evo.. but different guitars and all.. an ibanez basswood guitar is never gonna sound the same as a les paul

The Crawler seemed to be a bit more vocal and organic. The other pickups are more screaming, less organic.

its pretty clear the crawler had alot more life and tone! but i prefer the breed over the evo... anyway its academic as i won't be buying either of those :)
