Any way to fix a slipping Schaller straplock?
« on: September 15, 2008, 11:16:11 PM »
Noticed the other day that one of the strap locks has started failing, its like the pin doesnt go far enough into the button any more. It can be wiggled off pretty easily, its not really a problem when playing standing up because it hangs on the horseshoe bit anyway but I've had a couple of scares where I was sitting down then stood up and it'd came off without me realising.. so is it time for a new set or can it be fixed? They've had a good innings I guess, got them for my first guitar about 6-7 years ago!

Also on topic, I might get one of these straps, they look so cool. Ernie Ball nylon ones can only look so good!

Think it'd suit my tobaccoburst lp custom?

Unless the screw head in the button is out further than it should be and is stopping the pin from going in properly , then it might just be time to get some new straplocks

I'm guessing the spring inside the locking mechanism has worn out - I don't think there's any way to get at it to replace it.

I've used these for the past eight years, it is the last guitar strap you will ever need to buy... http://www.eldoradostraps.com/products-over.htm

They are also very receptive to custom work as well, I got my strap longer than their XXL size as I was wearing my guitar down by my knees at the time a-la Jimmy Page/Steve Clark.

As for the straplock, just get new ones - they do eventually wear out.  Here's the cheapest ones I could see on ebay with free P&P... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/SCHALLER-STRAP-LOCKS-Nickel-fit-FENDER-GIBSON-STRAT-LP_W0QQitemZ140266094431QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item140266094431&_trkparms=72%3A984%7C39%3A1%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C240%3A1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

did you look at the plain straps? - same quality except no country & western theme.

Yeah I dont like those either, too plain looking  I'm sure they're comfy but tbh my Ernie ball ones are comfy enough they just look boring.

Yeah, but it's the guitar that's meant to look interesting, not the strap!

(Oh, and you I suppose!  )

Other thing it could be is kak inside the bit where the spring is, or the spring's broke. Odd, cos I've had the same set on my Aria since I got it in '84 and they still work perfectly  :?

I bought a couple of the budget ones from axesrus and they're well beefy.  I was well impressed.
Advice worth what you just paid for it.

Well yeah but a sharp looking strap wont hurt anyone, the EBs are pretty ugly. I only got it cos I needed a cheap strap and it was available at the time. I reckon I'll wait til my birthday for one even though they're not expensive, parents/grandparents always want to buy me things rather than give me money. I reckon I'll just get a new set of Schaller locks soon, doesnt look like tihs one will be fixable. My first thought was to check the screw but its all in tightly so its not that.
