OK, I admit it: NGD
« on: September 16, 2008, 10:11:23 PM »
After selling my Mesa, I found myself too close to Coda in Stevenage to not go.  I hate that shop.  No, actually I love that shop - it's just that I don't think I've ever been in there & come out empty handed  I was determined that today would be different.

It started well.  They've moved all the Taylors to the Luton branch, the PRSes were tucked away at the back somewhere (& nothing inspiring that I could see), they have an impressive stock of Les Pauls (but the 3 I have already are more than enough), nothing interesting secondhand, the amp stock nothing to write home about etc.

Then I saw it - a black Jackson SL3.  It spoke to me.  I answered & before I realised what I was doing, words had come out of my mouth & one of the staff was handing it to me.

Once I had my hands on that wonderful Jackson neck, it was going to be an uphill struggle.  When they "happened" to have a secondhand Jackson case that they'd throw in for free (the jap Jacksons inexplicably don't come with cases) + 2 packs of strings & £20 off the display price, it was a done deal :)

It's a lovely player - great Jackson neck profile, OFR, fast feel, good frets, spotless finish (well, once I polished off the grubby fingermarks), nice weight etc.  Apart from a rosewood fretboard & no neck binding it's basically the same spec as a US SL1 (& a good 90% there on build quality)

Pics will follow once I've BKP'd it, as will clips... :)

Yeah, just not £3k fantastic (which might be why they've had it so long...)

It is a great shop - like a treasure trove piled to the rafters with stuff.  The thing I like most is that the staff are musos who have been in the business a while, seem to know about their guitars & take time to talk to you.  They usually have some interesting secondhand pieces.

Antag, I think when you sell stuff, you shouldn't by accident come across guitar shops ... well at least you bought the Jackson and not the other one, which would've been much more expensive, quote from your other thread:

"On the way back from selling my Mesa I took a short detour to the Wembley Guitar Centre where they have just got an Engl Steve Morse 100 in stock.  Apparently I was the first person to come in & try it "

Do you mean this one?  It's 2k not 3k?

That's the one.

It beat all the other Gibbo's and PRSes I tried (for me anyway).

Ah no, that's not the one I was thinking of - they had a red custom with a quilted top for £2999 that was in stock for ages, thought I saw it yesterday but it's not on the site anymore...

Yep, that's the one :)

Just to clarify, it wasn't a total impulse buy - I've been thinking about the SL3, or another HSS guitar, for a while, but hadn't seen one in stock anywhere.  Like I said, it's a really nice guitar to play.  I'm a total sucker for the Jackson soloist neck profile, it's just so comfortable - & at <½ the price of a US SL1 it's a bargain IMO.
