Cleaning an acoustic fretboard
« on: September 18, 2008, 06:34:39 PM »
I know that its a stupid question and they are bound to be the same, but as i rarely use them apart from playing around at home i'd rather be sure.

Am i ok to clean an acoustic fretboard (rosewood) with lemon oil just like i would a rosewood electric?

cheers

I play acoustic more than electric - lemon is fine.

hiya,
lemon oil doesn't really clean the neck, but yes you can use it just like on your electric. You dont need much, a bottle should last you years. If you soak it too often the wood can get a bit mushy, which i've noticed when doing refrets....all be it on older guitars.
If the neck is pretty encrusted i use a shaped plastic card (my wife's credit card preferably) and a specially shaped stanley blade that gets under the fret. The plastic card can be sharpened like a blade to really get under the gunk.
A good plain cotton cloth and elbow grease is always good too.
After removing the gunk, I polish frets up with an extra fine cutting compound and rotary mini felt wheel on a dremel flexi shaft,  then clean up with a spray that disolves grease very gently. Then I oil the neck and buff the whole thing up.
comes up a treat and gives a nice slick feel,
cheers,
