some more pickups... (Holy diver?)
« on: September 18, 2008, 09:33:47 PM »
... for my custom stratocaster from warmoth. alder body, maple neck.
im thinking about going for a holy diver in this HSS strat with the irish tours. the thick tone ive read about on here sounds just perfect. i dont have a hi-gain amp (Laney VC30), so im relying on the pickups and some pedals to really be able to drive me into that van halen-esque ballpark. does anyone on here have any experience with the Holy diver in an alder/maple strat?
Cheers :)

also, whats the difference between the current HD's and the old (ceramic i think) versions? (and if they're still made)

Can't really offer any suggestions, but I'm putting together a couple of Strats with Warmoth (swamp ash) bodies and maple necks, and I'm certainly considering the HD/IT HSS set.  Also the VHII.  I haven't owned either of those humbuckers, but they've always sounded to me like they'd be particularly well suited to Strats.

I think Antag may have a HD in a Strat, he certainly has one in an alder Jackson RR type.

I believe the old HD was indeed ceramic, with a slightly lower DC resistance, but not sure about the tonal differences.  It is still available as a special order, Crazy Joe has (or had?) a set in his Ibanez not so long ago.

the diver is on of the most awesome pickups I ever played

you can also install some kind of treble bleed circuit, so you can tame it down using the volume knob without losing the high end

I have one, in an alder tele, and had it in a strat. If you want fatness and the BEST clean tone ever you need this pickup.
Mississippi Queens, Holydiver.

I'm not totally up on youth-speak, but I think it started out as "own" or "owned" - in the sense of:

"I owned you there" = "I beat you", "I gave you a jolly good thrashing"

Now, "pwn" is a very common typo of "own".  Hence "pwned".
