So explain this one - how come no bids at £295 and when you lower the price it sold for £390?

Believe it or not, Mike, I only found out it had sold from this thread!  :oops: :lol:

I'd just assumed it wouldn't sell again, as this is the fifth(?) time I've listed it.  The funny thing is, each time there have been people watching it and asking enthusiatic questions, but no-one's ever bid.

Anyway, very pleased (assuming the chap pays!), that's much more of a fair price.  I was going to give up if it didn't sell for £285.

i always take a deep breath and start my auctions from 1pound for this reason. nothing like a bidding war to get people into the spirit of it.

I know what you mean, it does guarantee bids but I've watched a lot of those "low-start" auctions and I'm not convinced you end up with a higher final price.  OK, once in a while you might be fortunate and find 2 people who get carried away with the "thrill of the chase" and bid more than they intended, but it doesn't happen often.

More likely you'll have 5 or 6 people bidding over the week, but most of them will be muppets who think they're going to get a guitar for £50.  I'm really only interested in bidders who'll pay a price I find acceptable.

All I did this week was drop the starting price by £10, I just happened to get lucky for once!  :D

Doesn't have a reserve in eBay? Like you put it starting at £1 but put the minimum payment at £250, for example

Reserve prices are an eBay con.  They charge you a high listing fee based on the reserve price, even if the item doesn't sell.  And then they still charge you a final value fee if it does sell.

I also think reserves put people off (they do me anyway!).  It's frustrating to bid when you don't know what you're "aiming" at.  I used reserve prices a few times in the past and sometimes the highest bid would be really close to the reserve, but of course the item didn't sell.  For example I had a reserve of £395 and the highest bid was £385 - if the guy had known the price was £395 he probably would've paid it.

Yeah, the listing fee is 2% of the reserve price.

So if your minimum price is £500, a normal listing with £500 as the starting price only costs £1.30.  But if you have £500 as the reserve price, it costs you £10!

Not very much really, I know, but added to the final value fee and PayPal fee, you end up losing quite a lot.

Yes, it's totally unpredictable.  I usually have permanent searches on when I'm looking for anything, but I guess not everyone does that.

The fifth time?  I thought i had it bad, i put up my MG30DFX for auction three times and did not reach my reserve price.  I have had my fair share of problems with ebay over the past several months.  I had to deal with one bitch of a customer, not fun.  I am still attempting to rectify all the problems caused (auction ended 4 weeks ago).  I hope you have better luck than i Phil.

I've only ever had a few problems on eBay, touch wood.  A few months back somebody bought one of my guitars but didn't pay, so I emailed him - it turned out he'd completely forgotten he'd bid on it and wasn't expecting to win, and then he'd bought something else so he didn't have the money  :roll:. 

But it turned out OK - I contacted eBay and said we'd agreed to cancel the sale, then it sold for a better price the next week.

This V has been the most difficult to sell, for some reason.  Nearly always if something doesn't sell on the first listing it does the following week.
