Is it Worth it?
« on: September 24, 2008, 02:13:56 PM »
I'm planning on selling my Ibanez to help fund for an 8 string Agile, and I need to know whether its worth fixing it's problems.

First:

I overtightened one of the screws shortly after getting the guitar and destroyed the thread, thus needing pliars to sort it out. This means the D and G strings don't lock fully. Should I pay the £25 or so for a new locking nut, will I make it back?

Secondly:

Scratches on the back of the guitar, were there when I bought it, can these be buffered out or something? They don't go down to the paint, pretty shallow actually.

Bare in mind this guitar was £425 new and completely flawless otherwise.

Locking Nut - YES
Scratches - NO

Why?  A floyd (or Edge or whatever) equipped guitar without a functioning locking nut is practically useless, but the scratches are cosmetic (& out of site when you're playing).  JMHO, YMMV etc...
BKPs: HD, MM, NB, PK, CS, Ab (b&n); Am (b only); VHII, Tril (n only); IT, Slow, Sult (m&n)

+1 to the above.  might be worth seeing if you can just get the screws for the lock nut though.  last time i was missing one i just popped into the local guitar shop and they had some in a parts bin

a quick ebay search

Ordered the 3rd one, cheapest considering if I replace one, I should replace all of them to suit, and also black is the only one which wouldn't look completely out of place.

Out of interest though Wez, what would be needed to sort out those scratches? Is it heavy work, ie, a complete refinish, or can it just be polished out or something?

I would be able to get the worst of those scratches out using my buffing wheel
the finish is polyester so should be easily done
I wouldn't flat it back any more than 1200 grit wet n dry as it might always look a bit matted down unless yu have really good polishing stuff

yeah, best to get them buffed out professionally to match the gloss of the rest of the finish

In which case I'll just stick it on the bay when the nut turns up.

Ok, nut arrived. I have a choice of either using the black clamp/screws on the original gunmetal plate. Or switching out the gunmetal plate for the black one (looks better with matching).

However, the new black one is 42mm, and the original is a 43mm. Will this make any discernible difference?
