Round Two...'ding ding!'
« on: September 23, 2005, 08:36:09 AM »
Hi, well I am going to be getting a guitar made for me soon. It will be a strat-type body probably made of alder with a maple neck and rosewood fretboard. HSS formation.

I already have a set of VHII's, and I've earmarked a set of those Mules in minihumbucker form for doing up my Epi Firebird next summer, so I guess I'm not going to get either of those - unless anyone strongly thinks I should!

I'm looking for something so I can get some real hard rock power, but also the nice chiming cleans that you can get with singlecoils. I've got a few ideas in my head of what to get, but I'd appreciate other peoples opinions. Anyone?

Thanks :)

The Crawler sounds pretty good split and clean - and drives hard!

I'm also tempted by the Emerald too, especially since Tim seems to rave on about it, particularly as I think he said it had been re-voiced? I don't really know how it sounds though... :?

I like tha sound of Mothersmilk with Crawlers - that's what Geoff has in his strat that he let me play - very sweet tones!

I have an Alder bodied Strat with Maple neck and Rosewood fingerboard which has a Crawler and 2 Irish Tours in it and it's great :)

I play mainly 60s, 70s and 80s rock stuff and they work out great for that. I imagine the Crawler would be able to do with more power behind it, no problem :)

Id go with the Mother's Milks too - hot but not excessively powerful - have a warm clean tone - listen to Steve's clips to get an idea.

Well, everyone seems to be thinking the same as me!

The ideas i originally had were 2xMothers Milk with a Crawler in the bridge.

One thing though, would the relatively large difference in Dc readings between the two pickups present any problems, or would volume still be consistent throughout the pickups?

You'll get more from the bridge humbucker - but the spits will work great as the DC is similar between one coil of the HB and the singles.

The Crawler/Mothers Milk is a great set up, though I've been thinking about the Black Dog with 2 Slowhands for a rock guitar, but this might be more of a classic rock set up.

I have the Crawler with 2 Alnico IV P-90's and this is an awesome combination.  The P-90 has a bit more drive than a Strat pickup, but still gives you that single coil sound.  If you are having a guitar made, you could go with this.

Last but not least, for a lot of power with classic tones, I have a Nailbomb with 2 Trilogies.  This gives you a lot of drive to the amp.
So many pickups, so little time

I had the mothers milk/crawler set in my strat and the balance between them was great.Tim made them as a calibrated set. They work very well together.

Can I be very nosy and ask where you sourced the Epi Firebird from ?

I had a Tokai firebird and unfortunitely had to sell it :(

I adore firebirds (especially the firebird III) but can't afford a real one.

I like the sound of that!  How does it clean up though? Is it capable of backing off the volume and getting a 'classic' strat sound?
