Genz Benz Diablo
« on: October 03, 2008, 07:25:47 PM »
Hey guys I think I bought the wrong amplifier. I bought an Orange TT which is awesome, but it needs lots of pedals in front of it for anything outside of classic rock and blues (which it does awesomely) I saw this Genz Benz Diablo combo with two channels and some good distortion and reverb in it. Anyone have experience with this? Who knows I might sell my current rig and buy a new one

Well what do you need in an amp? I have a TT and all i need is that and a overdrive pedal, and i play many types of music. TO be fair the GB Diablo can't really compare to the TT.

I know Dave_mc has tried one and thought it was pretty good.

The TT and the Diablo are two TOTALLY different amps though- not just in sound but in power/volume, features/functions and versatility.

Do you need an amp for gigging/rehearsing/playing with other musicians or just a home or bedroom amp? What sort of music do you play?

I play rock mostly. The TT was definitely bought with bedroom practice in mind. I am not complaining I swear Its just I paid 970 USD for the Orange TT and cab. Now I am forking out more money for a Vox Bulldog Distortion. I already bought a sound booster and digidelay (which dosent work) I am also going to have to get a chorus and reverb pedal. Once I have that I should have a wicked sound. I play lots of Guns n Roses AC/DC Metallica (as hard sounding as music gets for me) Jimi Hendrix, Sykes, Srv

The Diablo 1X12 HAS TWO channels good distortion and reverb and that is going for a little less that what I will have paid for the Orange+pedals.

Two channels is something I really appreciate. Thats why I am going with the bulldog. With that and the true bypass it should be equal to the diablo

My band-mate has a Diablo head and Genz Benz 2x12 cab. I've never heard it's distortion though, as he uses it exclusively clean, to amplify his PODXT. And I have to say, that he gets the best sounds I have ever heard from a POD. DOn't know if it's because he has magic abilities, or if the Diablo just has the perfect combination of "whatever" for the POD, but it sounds OK, not great, but definately OK.   I do know that in the past he has played around with the amp's distortion, and prefers the POD.

What I also know is that the transformers are tiddly for a 50/60 Watter, as the head is so light. For me, that would not bode well for long-term relibility or tone.

The amps are also not generally that well thought of on certain forums. The Black Pearl, is well-loved by many, but not the (much cheaper) Diablo.

So I can't really be of that much help, apart from my assumptions and relating other people's opinions. Sorry  :?.

yeah, i did. then i found out that it's hated on places like HC almost as much as krank, so maybe i was on crack that day... anyway, i'll say i liked the one i tried a lot, but try it yourself as (like krank) they seem to be very much love or hate...

agreed about it being very different to the TT- the Genz Benz certainly isn't the only amp around that price that'll do what you want (assuming i know what you want, lol).  :)

i'd say steady on, take a step back, and don't buy anything for a while. instead of throwing good money after bad, spend some time trying amps, pedals etc. to see what you want; i haven't tried that vox pedal, but just because it has two channels doesn't mean it'll necessarily do what you want.
