I was really pleased with it but I haven't blasted it out at full volume or unscrewed the back to investigate the construction.

I would also like to mention that it is my first 4X12" and so I would not be able to compare with other 4X12" cabs.

It does, however, sound much fuller and more 3D than my Orange 1X12" that I have in my bedroom for practice.

What struck me was the nice chime it added to the clean sounds and the extra depth and response with the distortion.

I was using my Tiny Terror through it (which I have now decided to name David Byrne for obvious reasons) in mono and the pairing with that seemed really good but as the Tiny Terror is more of a 'British' sound (it is essentially a Vox AC-15 with a modded preamp), like the peacemaker, I wouldn't be too sure that the Fallen Angel would work all that well (you might have to budget for some speakers to replace the Vintage 30s, unless you like them that is).
I too use chicken as a measurement.

Mine's got vintage 30s as stock, and I think the 4X12 did too.

well when i can finally find one then i might stick some g12ks in. The big bassy ones maybe, although where the ashdown is already pretty bassy then i might just need some more flat EQ speakers. Anyway first I gota find one, if anyone sees on or w.e please just reply on this thread, say at local music store

is this a good buy? http://www.soundslive.co.uk/product.asp?id=1940 or would I be better of with the 50w. I am tempted by the hundred because it will have more headroom, be tighter due to higher wattage and has 212s not 112.

the amp you've linked to concerns me slightly - I'm curious to know how they're getting 60w from a pair of EL34s in class A (impossible imo).  a pair of EL34s in class A is more likely to give around 35w.  still a good deal though, however I would personally stay away from any amp with built-in digital effects.

I had an Ashdown "60W class A" EL34 amp in for repair. The B+ was about 540 V and both valves were drawing more than 60 mA each!! And with PCB mounted power valves! Not surprisingly this amp had a fan fitted.

Not sure I would design an amp like this......

And one site said it ran on 6 el34s, so I dunno hey! Anyway the fan isnt audible at talking levels of playing is it? And maybe the way its biased contributes to its unique tone

No the fan wasn't audible.

I was concerned about the plate dissipation: 540 x .60 = 32.4 Watts. Design maximum for EL34 is 25 Watts.

Yeah ill pitch in here the peacemaker is quite a low gain marshally type sound where as the FA is just raw and all out.

THis is teh current production model of the Fallen Angel.

http://www.haydenamps.com/amplifiers/detail.asp?ID=159

Ashdown changed it to having the built in effects a few years before stopping production.

Other than a second hand old ashdown from ebay this is your only chance.

However this is a solid state power section on this one.

Probably measuring peak, not RMS.

Actually you probably can get 60 W out of a pair of EL34s at a B+ of 540 V. Probably not class A though.....

I would say the DSL is a much better amp than a Chinese made Ashdown. Unless you're playing large venues without PA (and therefore need the extra wattage) I'd say you'll be making a mistake. Just get a good quality modern distortion pedal instead (hell, for that money you could get a Damage Control Demonizer) and you'll probably be better off.

yeh but the dsl sounds really dry and lacks low end. I really did think the ashdown got a better sound especially for classic rock. But maybe i just have a strange taste in tone, but if you wana buy the dsl401, feel free im selling

How loud have you had both amps, just out of interest?
