Hey.... Need new pickups......
« on: September 23, 2005, 09:21:19 PM »
Hey guys, i need some new pickups and ive had many recommendations to try Bare knuckle pickups.
I want to change my pickups in my newly bought Ibanez RG 1570.
I play mostly metal, shred and progressive rock.
My favorite bands are:
Dream Theater
Pantera
Metallica
Jason Becker
Steve Vai
Yngwie Malmsteen
and so on........

That means that my pickups should be very versatile.....
The bridge pickup should sound very nice in distortion, but at the same time cut through while playing lead.
My neck pickup should be my shred and clean pickup, so it has to be a bright pickup.
Do you guys think i should change the singlecoil too???
Is it even possible to cover John Petrucci´s  sounds in two pickups?
(John Petrucci=Dream Theater=my favorite band)

sorry for bad spelling mistakes...

Welcome to the forum. You're looking for a H/S/H set?

Im just wondering if its possible to mix different bare knuckle pickups such as a nailbomb in bridge and a holydiver for neck pickup(just an example...)?

I think you should probably get a matched bridge and neck HB set, and then a comparable middle pup.

The Miracle Man can definitely pull of the articulate, progressive side of metal, and still retain your own 'sound'. :)

But will the neck miracle man sound good when playing clean, and what about shred?

The MM has sounds great clean with a touch of compression on there ... nice and chimey! For distorted metal, it's perfect, the best metal pickup I've ever used.

The neck MM uses an alnico magnet, while the bridge uses ceramic ... it will definitely be able to handle both heavy soloing as well as clean work.

What about a Nailbomb set with Triolgy in the single coil poisition.  I think that is what Hayden has in his Ibanez.  I am sure he will be around soon to let you know.  Not having any H/S/H guitars, I'm only making some suggestions based on my pickups.

The MM set is great though I don't know what single coil I would use with it, probably the Trilogy again.

Any other pickup recommandations?

(And the nailbomb, and trilogy)

Phil, you don't have an H/S/H guitar?! You're a disgrace! You will now give me 10% of your guitar collection in pennitence!

I would go with Phil on this one and say the Nailbomb HSH set. They sound great in Ibanez RG's. Check out some of the clips in the player’s room. The BKP one and the ones posted by Lepermessa are both Nailbomb equipped RG's. It’s a very versatile pickup, you can play some serious metal with it, but it also has fantastic cleans and a cutting lead tone.

With all due respect,  I think that the Nailbomb is a bit of kneejerk, go-to reaction to most people on this forum ...  since at least 1/2 of the guitarists you mentioned play with either EMG pickups or through really high gain rigs/blade pickups/high output HBs, I have found that the Miracle Man comes closer to approximating that kind of tone than an alnico bridge pickup ... just my 2 cents; I'll go back to my corner now!

Actually I do have 1, but it is a mini-Mule humbucker in the neck and now sports a Mississippi Queen in the bridge and a Slowhand for the single coil.

I guess I get to keep the guitars
