Miracle Man + Cold Sweat...
« on: October 11, 2008, 05:05:15 PM »
So, I'm new here. And I want to buy myself a couple of BK p'ups.

I play a Gibson Explorer, through an ENGL Powerball head.

I was thinking of getting the MM in the bridge and the CS in the neck position.

I really like the sound of Pantera(maybe a bit less fuzz  ) Metallica, Opeth, ... to name a few... And I need great lead tone.

But I also want a pretty good clean sound, hoping to achieve with the CS p'up. But is the CS also good for lead tones?

So, do you guys think I will get a great, no, spectacular sound, with those p'ups?

Thanks!!

the cs neck probably has a nicer lead tone than cleans (which are still quite nice)... i haven't tried them in an explorer though, so i wouldn't be sure exactly how they'd sound in one. maybe one of the other regulars or tim could pitch in... :)

Yeah well it's not that I'm playing a LOT clean, but I do use it.

And I also play a strat, so I'm not quickly satisfied when it comes to cleans.

But actually, if I get a great leadtone out of it, and a decent clean tone, I'm probably more then satisfied  :)

Thanks!

the MM has a Ceramic magnet which makes the pickup alot more powerful so you will get a alot of grunt out of it if needed, it DCs around 17.5 k which as you can guess is pretty damn hot! I'm sure the MM will give you the sort of sound you are  after.

As for the neck i think you are bang on with that also. the CS neck will let them solos flow out beautifully with plenty of clarity in each note.

Allright, thanks for your reply.

I think so too!

yeah, that's pretty much exactly what i was looking for out of the neck pickup when tim recommended it to me- great lead tones, decent clean. :) but as i said, make sure it'll sound ok in an explorer... just in case.

I used this set for a while in my les paul (Miracle Man full set and Miracle Man bridge + Cold Sweat neck)
I had the Miracle Man set in another les paul too
I'm liking the Cold Sweat bridge better for Pantera and old Metallica
not ultra hot and bass heavy like the miracle man, but still very aggressive, crunchy and definitely more versatile

my bandmate is using my ex-miracle man set in his  custom mahogany A.R. Costa guitar (looks like a B.C. Rich Virgin) and he built  a huge amp head based on the ENGL Fire/Powerball/530 preamp design and Soldano SLO100 power amp section (you can hear some home recorded samples here: www.soundclick.com/zambelli , but he had cr@ppy pickups when he recorded that stuff)
his tone was already brutal with the cr@ppy ibanez pups he had and now he's got a huge improvement in clarity, punch and tightness from the miracle man set

but I still prefer the Cold Sweat set over the MM and PK and I highly recommend them
Riff Raff, Mules, Black Dog, VHII's, Cold Sweat

Damnit, I thought I knew which ones to buy, and now you got me into doubt again!!  :D

I listened to the soundclip of the MM from Tim, and I really thought that sounded great.
Problem is, I haven't found a decent soundclip with the CS in the bridge...

Thanks mate!

It's very hard to find a decent CS bridge sound clip, because only a few people have them in their guitars. That's the risk you take if you're gonna buy a CS bridge instead of MM bridge.

I just don't know what to think of the CS bridge either. Listening to all sort of sound clips, the CS neck always seems to sound great for the harder stuff and the MM just rocks.

I'd say: go for safety, use a condom -> CS/MM :D

:D Yeah, I think that's the combination I'm gonna get.

I'm not sure yet to go with the zebras, or covered ones. Does it affect the sound a lot?

Now the only thing left is guts to click that order button in the BKP shop  :o :D

^Covered/uncovered should make no real noticeable difference in sound at all. Tim has said in the past that he compensates with winding for any difference it would otherwise cause.

Allright, great. Thanks!!

Ow, btw, this may sound a bit noobish  but if I want a zebra set, with the white coil to the outsides, do I have to choose the zebra for the bridge, and the reverse zebra for the neck position??

Covers will make the pickup sound slightly warmer and uncovered would make it have slightly more presence to it.

Zebra set would have both the cream screws facing outwards where as the reverse zebra would have the black screw bobbins facing outwards. Not sure if that makes sense so i will get a zebra picture up.

This is a picture of a zebra set

The cream bobbins when put in a guitar will be facing opposite ends (outwards)

hope this helps

Yeah, I see what you mean, but if I want both the cream coils facing outwards, aren't I supposed to get a reversed zebra for the neck?
