It's weird because so many people have come and gone over the 15(?) years this was in progress - just thinking of the guitarists, they had Paul Huge/Tobias, Robin Finck, Buckethead, Richard Fortus, Zakk Wylde for about 5 minutes, Ron Thal... probably others I've forgotten.

When they started this record Grunge was still going, Nu Metal has come and gone, there were stories that they were doing material with Industrial influences, Axl seemed to have a bit of a Hip Hop phase (unless I was hallucinating).... ironically the kind of sleazy hard rock the band originally did has made a bit of a comeback...

I wonder how much stuff they recorded and abandoned, or is it just a big awkward mishmash of different styles?

BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

Hmm, maybe Epic like a big, sprawling, bloated, misguided movie.... Heaven's Gate perhaps?

(Great quote re that film: "It fails so completely that you might suspect Mr. Cimino sold his soul to obtain the success of The Deer Hunter and the Devil has just come around to collect." )

it might be good...i mean 15 years of pressure on you should push you to do it right....but the radio track..is yeah...god awful, cool solos..but ehh

i just think he may have forgotten what the idea was through the years...not just with the album, but with the whole idea behind why he was ever making music... he may just be some totally belligerent animal without a clue, trying to hear the ideas in his head over the thimble guitar solo he's paying 50 grand an hour for.

i have to say, i'm sure the actual musicianship is top notch on most of the tracks..but as for Axl...

go back to pumping gas then come out with an album cause at least when you were doing it that way it was waay  $%&#ing better..ok i've vented  8)

I don't know about the album but I just hope Axl Rose has sorted those skin tight white shorts out, the ones that looks like he borrowed them off a twelve year old girl.  With todays large screen televisions and the probability that he is bloated from bourbon, that could prove a particularily disturbing shot from the front stage camera.

I know what you mean but some of those musicians are crazy good though.

But how many Crazy good musicians just can't write a song to save their lives?

I'll wait but I'm not holding my breath for any form of brilliance.

from a personal perspective i always find the best songs are the ones that come to you in minutes.

Agonising over structure and continually fiddling with parts always seems to end up sounding worse than the original idea.

I'd love to hear the very first versions for comparisons sake!

I'd like to hear the finished version this year. I'm thirsty for a Dr. Pepper.

Maybe you're right, I'll probably get more enjoyment out of youtubing bumblefoot than waiting for this record to come out.
Now this is just a random thought, but wouldn't GnR have been better if he was always with them?
His version of november rain is brilliant, and he seemed to have came up with it just during axl's stage tantrums(there were a lot).

Well, I've just given this album a first listen.

I like it.

If you forget the hype, the fifteen years, and just think of it as an AR solo album, it's pretty good, I think.

Some of it really reminded me of Alice In Chains' Dirt album.  I think it's the layered vocals and quite grungy guitars.

Mark.

I loved it on first listen and now it's grown on me even more.  Totally unexpected.

I agree that we should think of it as an Axl solo album.  It's not GnR, but neither was any of the uninspired pap Slash has turned out in recent years.
