Please help!

Hey guys; I recently purchased a new RG1527 and a Carvin Legacy 2x12. The stock pickups aren't too bda but they leave for a lot to be desired in clarity and punch. One of the things I really cherish about my sound is how clear and fantastic the clean channel of the Legacy is, and it's something I want to keep.

I've been asking people what would be a great pair of pickups to put in, and I keep getting the same answer along the lines of omg dood put emgs 707s and 81-7 enit! and I've considered that, I'm just worried about losing the integrity of my sound and tone.


Do you guys have any suggestions?

There are plenty of people that swear by EMG pickups; however, since this is the Bare Knuckle forum, you can imagine which brand will be recommended!  :roll:

Can you tell us a bit more about your setup and playing style? ALL of the BK pickups have a lot to offer in the clarity and punch department, so that may help us to narrow your search down a bit.

I would also suggest you check out the demos in the PLAYER'S forum; there you will hear a lot of different pickups being put through their paces in a diverse mixture of guitars, rigs, and playing styles.

My setup as of right now goes as


RG1527 --> Carvin Legacy 2x12 ---> PODxt in fx loop. Sooner I'm going to be investing in the TC Electronic G System, still keeping my PODxt in the fx loop.

My playing style pulls from a lot of different people, I find myself inspired by Steve Vai, Robert Fripp, John Petrucci, Adam Jones and John McLaughlin  to name a few. My music varies between multi layered soundscapes to metal to jazz to whatever else interests me at the moment. It's very important that I keep the tonal ability to keep all of these as well. Hopefully, this has narrowed down something.

Hi Josh!

With that sort of a wide range of styles I'd stay passive, and avoid the EMGs. EMGs are great active pickups, but active isn't best for everything, and even at the metal end, BKPs Miracle Man and Warpig give  EMGs a run for their money!! EMGs allways sound like EMGs, a bit clinical, where BKPs allow the tone of the guitar to come through and sound more organic.

I think most BKPs are available in 7 string format. The Nailbomb is a standard goto set for a versatile sound in an Ibanez, and as it's a set I use I recommend it. The neck can do a great jazz tone, and the coil splits are very snappy and stratty, and the bridge is great plaing metal/rock/whatever! Have a listen on the players forum to some clips.

+1 for the Nailbomb 7-string. They'll keep their clean tone if they're not too close to the strings. Nailbombs sound superb in Ibanez guitars.
