Is there an islolation cab that has

- replacable speaker
- Mini mic stand so you can
----- use your own mics
----- position the mic

?

Or am I going to have to build one?

I see a rainbow rising
Look there on the horizon
And I'm coming home

Think this one does everything you want:

Thanks guys

That grendel looks great - but there doesnt seem to be a way to get it in the UK

Rockwool, plywood, mic stands, jagsaw, nails and evostick are still winning, unless I can get a Dead Room here (plus their mics dont look positionable. I want them to be positionable. But I reckon I could make that mod to on that has a mic stand in it at least)

Hey Fella, I made one earlier this year using plywood and some spare acoustic tiles I had. Works well, but when my JCM800 is on full tilt, anything low register still shakes the room a bit even when it is standing on another couple of tiles! :(

I'm pretty sure I've read that one of the features is that you can slide the mic holder backwards and forwards to change the mic position. It doesn't say it on their website, but there was a big thread on Harmony Central about it, where the makers were looking for input. They seemed like nice guys, and it's a small business - I'm sure you could work something out for shipping from the states.

Acoustic tiles do NOTHING to low end. Nothing whatsoever.

You need rockwool.

http://www.realtraps.com/data.htm

Obviously selling you their wares, but I've had a short exchange with one of the two main dudes, and he A: didnt try to sell me anything and B: said that rockwool works

So, if you get 6" plates of this stuff

http://www.atsacoustics.com/item--Owens-Corning-703-Case-of-6--1004.html

Whereever you can find it, line the insides with it (you could probably stand to go with thinner in the walls, but the floor and whatever side the speaker faces need rather a bit) then you should be sorted.

Thats my plan, anyhow. Its the best I can think of short of building it from breeze blocks :D

Thats what I'm thinking - I'll as what the positionability is (lateral is great, but I want distance too) and if we can sort something out for shipping.

Thanks for telling me about these guys, noll. They seem to be on top of their game.

Thats the stuff. You want the 60kg m^3 density 100mm slabs. Get two packs (of 4) and double up opposite the speaker and on the base.

I'd been thinking about maybe the axtrak effort for home recording but had reservations about not being able to change speakers or use any of my own mics, that grendel looks the absolute business for my humble needs.

Good thread!

I'm getting a dovetail jig and router very soon so I can knock up my own cabs - I'll have a bash at one of these.  Should be doable for about £50 in materials (minus the speaker).

I too discounted the axtrak because you can forget me recording metal guitar into an itsy bitsy 6" speaker that you cant change through some stock one-size-supposed-to-fit-all mic that you cant move.

And the randal because it doesnt use the right kind of sound proofing.

Sent word to grendel and to custom audio (for rockwool). Will see what happens!

Well grendel didnt reply.

I'm just gonna build one. Then I can overbuild it to all hell and back, and it'll still cost me less, and be more fun.
