Just bought some speakers of ebay, need help with the wiring!
« on: November 10, 2008, 10:21:06 PM »
Just got a couple of vintage G12H-30's of ebay; but they have the old style conections, i.e. they are not the push on ones.

These are the 75's connections that i have removed from the cab:

Can i just solder the push on connector from the cab onto the terminal on the speaker?

Also the speakers comming out had two terminals at 90 degree angles for each wire (i.e. positive and negative)

Would i just solder to two wires from the cab onto the same connection for the old speakers seeing as they only have one for each?

Many thanks in advance!

As long as the new speakers are the same impedence as the old ones (Ohms?) and you're not looking to change that then just cut the push on clippy things off the end of the old wires and solder them directly onto the tabs of the new speakers.. The old 90 degree tabs are connected to the same spot, just there to give you 2 places to connect the 'push on' clippy things (I'm sure they have proper names..) so as long as you get your + and - right it will be the same.

Try to get the best physical connection between the wires and new speakers without relying on solder to conduct the current so much but just to keep the wires in place.

Argg

Ive just wired one in and nothing! not a sound.

I cut the thingys off and wrapped the wire around the hook; i then soldered the wire to the hook filling in the hole and nothing!!

Obviously i can only play at bedroom level but cause they are only 30watt not 80 like the others; is  there a chance that they need to be driven harder (clutching at straws i know - it wouldnt have been so bad if they were push on ones but if they dont work ill have to spend ages desoldering them!)

I would wire them both in before testing as you might be messing with the impedance and could blow your output transformer in your amp. If there is no load at all it could damage your amp too so be careful when testing that you're not gonna explode your amp. They shouldn't need any more driving than the old speakers, doesn't really work like that. Put it at a normal bedroom volume you would've used and test it like that, if there's no sound then turn it off so you don't hurt anything.

Pretty sure the wires get shoved into those eyelets, maybe the hooks aren't connected to the conductor part, unsolder them and put the wires in through the holes, wire up both speakers how it was wired before and try again.

If it still won't work after that maybe you should consider the possibility that the speakers you got off eBay are broken? Could happen, who knows.

Remember that you can do a basic test for speaker function by connecting a 9V battery accross the terminals and watch to see the cone move once, either in or out.

Cheers guys; the speakers are the same rating as the ones coming cout so should be alright with the load.

I went back afterwards and pushed all the other connections in and it worked after that!

Am starting to wonder whether it was worth it tho as the frame of the second speakers is warped.  It wont sit flush on the baffle and the holes dont line up!

Its 30+ years old - so i was hoping for a a nice vintage vibe - i cant really force the speaker as it has cork (not rubber) style rim - and i'll only end up damaging the frame further. :(

Doh!

It may be worth mounting it with a soft ring behind it so it doesn't end up shaking itself to death if it's not mounted properly.
Advice worth what you just paid for it.
