PK didnt Fit me, HELP...
« on: November 10, 2008, 11:43:00 PM »
Hi Guys

After many time with all the BKP in the boxes waiting to be installed by my tech, I finally was able to install them in 2 of my guitars (2 more still in quere).

They are:

- Caparison Angelus HGS pro trans black - Miracle Man set
- Caparison Orbit - Painkiller + sinner

I was able to tried them las thrusday in live and this is what I think:

About the pickups... well, I must say I really like BKP... but I'll tell you my personal thoughts...

Miracle Man set in the Angelus... works really great with that guitar, the tuning I use there (drop A#) and the amp... (Diezel Herbert) really good match, I think I'm really happy, great palm mutes, thick and direct, like it !!!

Painkiller in the Orbit bridge and a sinner in the neck... I must say that, althought they are good pickups, they are not for me... The sinner has some amazing cleans, but is not "thick" enough for me for leads... too thin, so I will take it off and put the Caparison back again ...

About the Painkiller, it's a really powerfull pickup, but I'm not 100% happy with it with the orbit... (and my personal tastes). I play some kind of Melodic Death, Swedish style, (In flames, Soilwork, etc).

I have that guitar in C, and well, it has tooo much "trebles" for my taste... you can get some amazing armonics, really easy, but for my needs, it's a little too screaming, I need something a little lower... I had hard times setting the amp on stage the other day, having to turn all the deep and bass up, and drop the presense and treble and mids down to compensate it a little... (that was the first thing that called my attention and worried me, of course)

I'm thinking on replace it for a Nailbomb... but not sure how it will work with Mahogany body and neck (I have all my hopes on it)... but I dont want to get a muddy sound... (although I think it's almost impossible with the herbert, but I would love to hear your thoughts).

What do you think about the NB for that music style, and for mahogany guitars ???

Any thoughts would be really appreciated.

Here you have a pic of the show ;)

that's one beautiful nitro finish! :D

did you try to lower the the PK height?

do you use any kind of booster with tone knob?

yeah maybe you just need to drop the treble side down.

Thanks for your answer...

It's not the height of the pickups (cuase its not too high), but I Think it's the nature of the PK itself (not bad, just not 100% for me)...

About the tone... this guitar (the Caparison Orbit), has no tone selector, just a push/push to toggle between bridge and neck... This is the guitar:

Do you think a NB would work with this one, with mahogany boady and hard maple neckthru ???

Thanks guys !!!

i have a V with mahogany body and maple neck (not neck through). i fitted a holy diver and its an excellent all-rounder in that guitar. not too bight either. worth considering. its not by anymeans a pure 1980s vivian campbell sound either, it can easily sound a bit industrial like tool or whatever.

That maple through, FR, no-vol and V design are *probably* going to be really lacking in bass

To get as much low end, or at least low end potential as possible and have a smooth mid and articulate high that you should like, I'd say C-pig, and dont forget to remind/tell your tech that you can control the low/high balance in a rough way with the relative height of the neckwards and bridgwards poles (neckwards higher more bass, bridgewards vice versa)

Thank you so much for your answers !!!

Well, it may be true... lacking bass, I really think that... and I also think that it wasa attenuated by the PK, which is a very high pup,...

About the Warpig... I really think that pickup is not for me, for all I've heard (clips and comments), too much output and too saturated... I've got a very high gain amp (Diezel Herbert), and that would be toooo much (I really dont like the warpig really)

Because of that possible lack of bass you mentioned, I thought about the Nailbomb... I've heard it works the best of all the BKP for my style, and could help to give some more bass, but not sure... that's why I asked you :$:$:$ (It needs to be powerfull, with great palm mutes, and good leads...  but the ryhtm is really important for me... it must be able to bit any EMG81 or 85

What do you think ???

I dont think the Nailbomb will give you the tightness you want

I havent played the holy diver, so I cant really comment, but from clips it might be for you - its one of the least bright, most low-middy high output BKs, as far as I can tell.

I think to control the bass in that guitar, because any BK save the warpig will sound bright in it (they let the guitar sound through very strongly), you need a double screw pole pickup. You can get A LOT more low end out of a double screw pole by raising the neck-facing screws.

I'd stick with the paikiller, or get another miracle man, but make it double screw pole. If you really have an aversion to the PK now, or if you suspect that its high end/high mids are never going to work with the Orbit, then get a double screw pole miracle man.

the nailbomb and holy diver will be tight enouh if you have a booster
the holy diver boosted on the right amps sounds a lot like Arch Enemy

For the tightness, but not more bass, per se, I think.

A8, however, might be an idea!

Unholy Brazilian Black Death Thrash Fusion Metal Hails Man
q:p
im not sure if my opinion would count, as the other guys has much more powerfull and quality gear than i am, but im sure i have at least pretty good ears.
i think you should try the Nailbomb in the bridge of that V.
q: )
im placing a custom order with tim for the neck of My Charvel. its a single coil. but, I asked tim to try to Capture the Tone fo the Nailbomb, for a single coil, neck .
cause i dont want to part ways with BKP in that particular guitar
i want it 100% bkp.
and the others, weLl, Duncans and EMGS.

Q:)

JP

For me, the Nailbomb Bridge gives me the following character.
Tight,Tighter than what i expected, Bass. crunchy overal sound(i wish it has more highs and much more middles, but its not a problem at $%&#ING All. dont even worry about it.)
a pretty airy middle high and Highs.
Very Good, more than i wanted(and its a GOOD SURPRISE, NEVER A bad thing) output.
and it has a very Good articulation for the Swedish Type of RIFFAGE that we share in Both bands
warpig or painkiller did do it for me, and miracle man EITHER.
in fact, miracle man has an ultra tight and raw bass.
the only thing i liked it.
but i preffer the more WET, and rubber like feel of the nailbomb's Bass. its also Tight, the way i wanted. thats the reason im keeping it.
i just wish it had MORE MIDDLE MIDDLES. q: ) my favorite frequency.
