Faded Flying V
« on: November 13, 2008, 06:55:39 PM »
Hey there, 1st post here so be nice  :)

Thinking about picking up a WP for my Faded Flying V. At the moment I have a Rio Grande BBQ in the bridge and the stock pickup in the neck, I actually like the neck pickup very much so that's staying. But the BBQ just isn't working with this guit. The V is my back up guitar, usually I prefer low output pickups, like the Black Dog in my Heritage LP. But in this instance I want something completely insane. The V just sounds HOLLOW, no bottom end, a little bit of bite on the top end and the mids sound like a c--ked wah, not exactly what I'm looking for.

I guess my question is, is the WP a good choice for a two piece mahogany body, and will I get a nice round bottom end, more balanced mids and a really biting top end out of the Alnico Warpig? Or should I look at a different model? Also how does the WP react with fuzzes, this is a MUST for me.

For reference my band is in my sig, running a Marshall JMP2203 and various fuzzes out front for some songs.

Considering that you're after as much bottom end as you can get, good bite on the highs and a tamed down midrange (did I get that right?), I'd say you've pretty much described the Miracle Man.

First stop is to ask Tim, though - he will guide you wisely to the right choice :)

Hope this helps,

Roo

Yeah, I mean I don't need the biggest bottom end possible, but I need the guitar to sound more filled out. And the tame mids is more or less getting rid of that c--ked wah sound. I'll look into the MM though, thanks a ton!

yeah, like roo, i'm thinking miracle man too. Vs can sound dark so i would be wary of a warpig.

Ha thanks man!

I checked out the MM, I'm not found of ceramic pickups, anyone ever try an AV in a MM? I'll take ya'lls word for it though. The V is actually not that dark, it's super light and resonant though, which gives an airy sound, not as much bite on the top end. My Heritage 150 with the black dog is much darker and thicker but it's a solid slab  :D

you might try the black dog in the V - just to get the calibration. i tried a MM in one of my Vs once - it was rather modern sounding and not for me... but it was a balanced tone, quite thick, biting, and with a good solid bass response. it really worked.

The black dog isn't going anywhere, it's one of those "if it ain't broke" type deals. I'm looking for something really different than what I got going with my Heritage though, sounds like the MM might be what I'm looking for. Thanks for all the replies!

For what it's worth, I've just switched from a MM-loaded Ibanez to a Black Dog loaded WezV custom (5-piece Maple - Bubinga - Wenge - Bubinga - Maple neck through, Bubinga wings with a Wenge top and ebony Fretboard, baritone fanned fret (see other thread here for WezV Baritone finished ;)), and I can access the same ball-park tones (with a bit of amp-tweaking) from both guitars, although the BD-loaded WezV custom is amazingly more versatile and dynamic, but no less brutal :) I was a bit worried about going for a) low output and b) AlNiCo for the pickup, but in the end, Tim's recommendation was absolutely spot on.

What I'm saying is: Call Tim!

And good luck!

I gotcha! I mean honestly I can't go wrong with any of Tim's pickups, just find the right fit for my guitar and my ears!

I do love the Black Dog though, every chance I get I talk about it and how it made my guit. come alive after I pulled the '59 out of the bridge. The Heritage being my #1 I don't want to take the time/effort to rip out the pick up that I love in it just to put it back in later. I guess I'll have to get my act together and give Tim a call and figure out what to do.

i've actually got a miracle man in my Gibson Faded V. sounds great. sounds somewhat similar to the stock bridge, except a bunch more output and a fuller sound.

Sweet good to hear, looks like I'll be looking at the MM.

I'd put a miracle man, but it doesn't sound like what you're looking for
the miracle man is a very focused metal oriented pickup
not really round bottom end and no wah mids
you better try the alnico pig
it's plenty of nicely compressed and very grainy mids and a fat and smooth bass response
and yes, you can get a biting top end!
I thought it was going to lack highs, but it has a lot of treble

here's one nice video of the alnico pig in mahogany body:

You post over at HCAF right? Nice video! I'm going back and forth between the two. I'm not really looking for a wah like mids, just the BBQ has that quality in the V and that's something I'm trying to get away from. I think I just need to call/email Tim and see what he has to say.
